2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Reviews Summary

Chevrolet was a pioneer in small SUVs with the original S-10 Blazer, but today’s Chevrolet Equinox is just one of many small crossover SUVs competing in a market segment that has become the default choice for many new car buyers. Among the Equinox’s many rivals are popular crossovers like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.

All of those competitors are much fresher than the Equinox, which was last redesigned for the 2017 model year. This third-generation Equinox was a major leap forward when it launched, as the model it replaced was fairly long in the tooth at the time. But now Chevy risks getting left behind by competitors again.

The Equinox does get a number for small changes for the 2022 model year, including revised styling, a new RS model with sporty design elements, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available front and rear park assist and automatic parking assist, heated power-adjustable exterior mirrors with integrated indicators, and a handful of new color and interior trim options.

We spent a week with an Equinox RS for this review. The new-for-2022 RS is positioned near the top of the Equinox lineup, above the base LS and LT trim levels, but below the top Equinox Premier model.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and distinctive design, with its blunt and bulbous nose giving it an aggressive appearance. Over time, this look became more familiar, blending into the landscape of modern SUVs. The black windshield pillars created a floating roof effect, while the swollen haunches balanced the styling. However, the cartoonishly-flared quarter panels could overwhelm the design, especially with the 20-inch wheels available on higher trims. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid offered a two-tone interior with leather upholstery on Limited and Platinum trims, though the dashboard's asymmetrical design and reflective screen could be distracting.

In contrast, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox featured a refreshed design with a new grille, LED headlights, and subtle rear fascia changes. The grille's upright stance and large fake air intakes gave it a chunkier look. The Equinox maintained a car-based crossover appearance, avoiding the rugged styling of some competitors. Inside, the dashboard's petal-like design housed a touchscreen and air vents, creating a cohesive look. While materials and fit were decent, the RS model added black trim and red stitching for a sportier feel, though the interior remained subdued.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

6/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, achieving 36 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel drive. Its total output was 243 horsepower, with optional all-wheel drive. While more efficient, the Highlander Hybrid's performance was less engaging, with adequate power but a strained engine sound during acceleration. The steering felt lifeless, and the ride was soft, leading to unwanted body movement. However, it handled well on smooth roads and offered a quiet, comfortable ride on the freeway.

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox came with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. It offered more torque than some rivals but less horsepower. The Equinox excelled in city driving with its responsive torque but felt coarse at higher speeds. The six-speed automatic transmission had rough shifts, and the Equinox lacked sporty handling. Despite this, it provided decent comfort on rough roads.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

6/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offered roomy front seats with power adjustments and leather upholstery. The second-row bench seat increased capacity to eight but felt narrow for three adults. The third-row seat was uncomfortable, with limited legroom and headroom. Cargo space was generous, with 48.4 cubic feet behind the second row and 84.3 cubic feet with seats folded. However, storage solutions were less accommodating than previous models.

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox provided seating for five with good headroom and decent second-row legroom. The tall seating position offered a clear forward view, though rear visibility was hampered by small windows. The climate controls were conveniently placed, and cargo space was 29.9 cubic feet with seats up, expanding to 63.9 cubic feet with seats folded. However, it lacked features like a sliding second-row seat.

Technology

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The top infotainment system featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, and navigation. The system was user-friendly, though the sound quality varied. Driver Easy Speak projected the driver’s voice to rear passengers, and a video rearview mirror offered a clear view behind the vehicle.

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox included a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot. Higher trims offered an 8-inch screen and Bose audio. The infotainment system was responsive, with smartphone-like icons. While tech-savvy buyers might desire more features, the system covered essential functions effectively.

Safety

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, with enhancements like intersection support and emergency steering assistance. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The Highlander received a five-star NHTSA rating and was expected to achieve a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS.

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox earned top IIHS scores in most tests but received a "Marginal" rating in the updated side crash test. It achieved a five-star NHTSA rating. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a Safety Alert Seat. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
