2021 Lexus NX Hybrid Reviews Summary

The 2021 Lexus NX compact SUV is showing its age. It’s not an inherently bad vehicle, but with a design that dates back to the 2015 model year, it’s struggling to keep pace with fresher competition—including the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln Corsair, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60—and can’t justify its positioning as a premium product.

Lexus offers the gasoline-only NX 300 and the NX 300h hybrid, but we’ll focus on the latter for this review. The big news for the 2021 Lexus NX 300h is a new F Sport Black Line special edition, which adds sportier F Sport styling features that normally aren’t available on the hybrid. It also comes with a matching two-piece set of Zero Halliburton luggage. Other changes include additional standard driver aids and "low-profile" windshield wipers.

We tested the Black Line for this review, but with production limited to 1,000 units, it will likely be sold out by the time you read this. However, it’s mechanically similar to the regular-production NX 300h hybrid trim levels—base and Luxury.

2022 Buick Enclave Reviews Summary

Buick's three-row SUV gets a welcome freshening for the 2022 model year. Updates include new front and rear styling, new wheel designs, and exterior lighting enhancements. Inside, there's a new steering wheel, a restyled center console with new shifter buttons, and revised seat trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto debut, and a new wireless phone charger is now available. But perhaps most importantly, the 2022 Enclave receives desperately needed standard driver-assistance and safety technology.

Look and feel

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

7/10

2022 Buick Enclave

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid presented a blend of sharp edges and a streamlined profile, fitting snugly between the Lexus UX and RX models. Its design, while not traditionally SUV-like, maintained a familiar Lexus aesthetic. The F Sport Black Line variant added a distinctive touch with a larger mesh grille, dark-finish 18-inch wheels, and a striking Grecian Water blue paint. Inside, the NX Hybrid's interior design, once radical, had become familiar, featuring a stepped center console and a sporty feel. However, the material quality leaned more towards mainstream than luxury, with plastic switchgear and trim.

In contrast, the 2022 Buick Enclave embraced a more conservative design approach, reflecting its customer base's preference for comfort and tradition. Over the years, Buick transitioned to an SUV-focused lineup, with the Enclave leading the charge. The 2022 model received a mid-cycle refresh with new exterior styling elements and a restyled center console. The Avenir trim stood out with unique design features and luxurious touches. Inside, the Enclave offered a spacious cabin with comfortable seating and upgraded materials, making it a strong contender in the near-luxury segment.

Performance

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

2022 Buick Enclave

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid featured a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a total of 194 horsepower. It came standard with all-wheel drive, but its performance was more focused on fuel efficiency than excitement. The NX Hybrid accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds, with a top speed of 112 mph. The sport-tuned suspension in the Black Line package improved handling, but the steering felt numb, and the drivetrain struggled with seamless power delivery.

The 2022 Buick Enclave, on the other hand, was powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It offered a smooth and quiet ride, enhanced by the Avenir Technology package's premium suspension. The Enclave's powertrain was surprisingly responsive, and the vehicle handled various terrains with ease. Despite its size, the Enclave delivered impressive acceleration and a serene cabin experience, thanks to Buick's QuietTuning technology.

Form and function

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

2022 Buick Enclave

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid had limited interior space, with the least front headroom in its segment and cramped rear seats. The front seats offered good support, but rear visibility was compromised by the sloping roofline and thick pillars. Cargo space was also limited, with 16.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 53.7 cubic feet with them folded. While some features like power-folding seats were available, they weren't standard.

In contrast, the 2022 Buick Enclave excelled in interior space, offering ample room for passengers in all three rows. The Enclave's third row was comfortable even for taller passengers, and the second-row captain's chairs provided easy access. The restyled center console featured push-button transmission gears, and the Enclave offered generous cargo space, with 23.6 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 97.4 cubic feet with all seats folded. Power-folding third-row seats added convenience.

Technology

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

4/10

2022 Buick Enclave

6/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid's infotainment system was a weak point, featuring an 8-inch display with a difficult-to-use Remote Touch Interface touchpad. While it supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system felt dated, and the base audio system was underwhelming. Analog controls were a saving grace, but the overall experience was lacking for a luxury vehicle.

The 2022 Buick Enclave offered a more user-friendly infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless phone charging. The Premium and Avenir trims added navigation and a superior 10-speaker Bose audio system. The Enclave also featured a range of standard and available tech, including a head-up display and adaptive cruise control, enhancing the driving experience.

Safety

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

9/10

2022 Buick Enclave

7/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid earned a “Top Safety Pick+” from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It came with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, offering a comprehensive suite of driver aids. However, it lacked a 360-degree camera system, which was a common feature among competitors.

For 2022, the Buick Enclave made significant strides in safety, standardizing the Buick Driver Confidence Plus package across all trims. This included features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot warning. The Enclave received "Good" ratings in most IIHS crash tests, with an "Acceptable" score in the updated side-impact test. NHTSA ratings were pending, but the Enclave was well-equipped with advanced safety features.
