2021 Lexus IS Reviews Summary

The Lexus IS enters its fourth generation of production, embodying lessons learned from the LC and RC. The 2021 IS targets enthusiast drivers and luxury buyers who might be thinking German first, and it seeks to recalibrate expectations of what a compact luxury sports sedan can be.

2022 BMW i4 Reviews Summary

After entering the modern electric car era with the radical i3 hatchback, BMW is dialing things back a bit. The 2022 BMW i4 isn’t as radical as the i3, but it may also appeal to a wider audience.

Instead of a dedicated platform, the i4 uses the same body shell as the gasoline BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, which in turn is a four-door version of the BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible. The result is an electric vehicle with dimensions fairly close to the BMW 3 Series, the Bavarian automaker’s signature product. By offering an electric alternative, BMW is showing that it’s serious about EVs.

The i4’s closest rivals are the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar, as both are electric four-doors from premium brands. Most of BMW’s traditional rivals, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, are focusing on electric crossover SUVs and more expensive sedans for now. The Porsche Taycan is positioned above the i4 in price and performance aspirations.

As with other BMW models, the i4 launches in multiple configurations based on its drivetrain rather than conventional trim levels. The single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) BMW i4 eDrive40 is the base model, and the one we test drove for this review. Buyers looking for more power can upgrade to the dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) i4 M50, which is featured in our video review, above.

Look and feel

2021 Lexus IS

8/10

2022 BMW i4

7/10

The 2021 Lexus IS was a testament to the art of automotive design, reflecting a dynamic and athletic persona. Its exterior was characterized by a sleek, forward-leaning stance that suggested motion even when stationary. The elegance of the IS was accentuated by the strategic distance between the front axle and dashboard, while the fast roofline and distinctive window design added a sporty flair. The signature spindle grille and narrow headlights contributed to its assertive appearance, and the flawless paint and chrome finish were hallmarks of Lexus craftsmanship. Inside, the IS offered a modern aesthetic with a simple yet bold dashboard design, though the analog clock seemed outdated amidst the contemporary features.

In contrast, the 2022 BMW i4 maintained a familiar design language akin to the gasoline-powered 4 Series Gran Coupe, with its oversized grille being a point of contention. The i4 boasted improved aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0.24 for the eDrive40 and 0.25 for the M50, achieved through various design tweaks. The interior struck a balance between minimalism and traditional BMW elements, featuring a freestanding screen and familiar control layout. However, the seats were noted for their lack of bolstering, and the fastback roof limited headroom. Despite these drawbacks, the i4's interior felt open and airy, with efficient use of space in the center console.

Performance

2021 Lexus IS

7/10

2022 BMW i4

9/10

The 2021 Lexus IS was engineered for performance, with a range of powertrains to suit different driving preferences. The IS 300 RWD featured a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 241 horsepower, while the AWD variant had a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 hp. The IS 350 models, both RWD and AWD, offered a more powerful 311 hp V6. The IS delivered a top speed of 143 mph, with 0-60 mph times ranging from 6.9 seconds for the IS 300 RWD to 5.6 seconds for the IS 350 RWD. The car's handling was precise and balanced, thanks to its suspension and steering systems. Fuel efficiency varied, with the IS 300 RWD achieving 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

The 2022 BMW i4, on the other hand, offered impressive electric performance. The base i4 eDrive40 had 335 horsepower and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. The M50 model, with its two-motor powertrain, delivered 536 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. Despite its weight, the i4 handled well, with a low center of gravity and advanced suspension systems. The Dynamic Handling Package enhanced the driving experience, providing a smooth ride and precise steering. The i4's regenerative braking system was innovative, though the adaptive recuperation system was not entirely intuitive.

Form and function

2021 Lexus IS

7/10

2022 BMW i4

7/10

The 2021 Lexus IS prioritized driver comfort and functionality, with an easily adjustable driver position and supportive seats. The F Sport trim offered bolstered seats with heating and ventilation. The interior featured ample storage, including a spacious trunk with 10.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The rear seats were comfortable for two passengers, though legroom was limited.

In comparison, the 2022 BMW i4 had a low seating position despite the battery pack beneath the floor. The interior felt open, but the fastback roof limited headroom. The front seats lacked bolstering, and the wireless charging pad was too small for larger phones. The i4 offered 10 cubic feet of cargo space, with folding rear seats for added versatility. However, it lacked a front trunk, unlike some competitors.

Technology

The 2021 Lexus IS featured a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Lexus Enform services offered various connectivity options, with free trial periods for owners. The Mark Levinson audio system was a standout feature, providing exceptional sound quality.

The 2022 BMW i4 showcased the latest iDrive8 infotainment system with a curved display, combining a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. The user experience was intuitive, with a rotary controller and voice recognition system.
