2021 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler is an icon. Sports cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette may often be described as icons, but they can’t hold a candle to the Wrangler’s bona fides. It harkens back to the original Willys Jeep and has evolved through the years to be an instantly recognizable fixture of the American motoring landscape.

What makes this all the more incredible is how the industry has changed through the years. The best-selling SUVs on the market are all based on car platforms, and emphasize efficiency and comfort. Yet the rugged, comparatively inefficient Wrangler, which also rides like a truck, is still popular.

Part of that comes from being different from everyone else, but another part is Jeep’s commitment to continually update the Wrangler to meet the demands of its buyers. The four-door 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited accomplishes both, by now offering a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid (changing with the times) and a potent Hemi V8 (beating to its own drum). Both powertrains are exclusive to the four-door Wrangler; neither is available with the two-door Wrangler body style.

2022 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia shares its platform with the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. It comes with rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or available four-wheel-drive (4WD) drivetrains, except TRD Pro models, which come with standard 4WD. The Sequoia and comes in six trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Pro, Limited, Platinum, and the Nightshade Special Edition. While competitors have refreshed their full-size SUVs over the past few years, Toyota has stood pat with the Sequoia, relying on minor cosmetic updates to keep the SUV in the hunt since 2008.

2021 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler retained its iconic design, characterized by its notched grille, circular headlights, and exposed bolts and hinges. This rugged appearance made it instantly recognizable and appealing to those who appreciated its toy-truck-for-adults aesthetic. The Wrangler offered various trim levels, each with unique styling elements, but all maintained the core design features that set it apart from other vehicles on the road. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized function over comfort, with an upright seating position and limited legroom, which some drivers found charming rather than inconvenient. The Wrangler's trims ranged from the bare-bones Sport to the off-road-ready Rubicon, each offering different levels of comfort and capability.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia presented a more mature and refined design, maintaining a classic SUV look with modestly sized grilles and elegant wheel arches. Despite its age, the Sequoia's exterior design remained tasteful and understated. Inside, the Sequoia's interior showed its age with a somewhat dated design, but it was built with high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship. The spacious three-row seating and ample cargo space made it a practical choice for families. The Nightshade Special Edition added modern touches with darkened chrome and black-painted finishes, bringing the Sequoia's appearance up to date.

Performance

2021 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler offered a diverse powertrain lineup, including gas, diesel, mild-hybrid, and the powerful Hemi V8. The standard 3.6-liter V6 engine produced 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Other options included a mild-hybrid eTorque variant, a 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by three 4WD systems: Command-Trac, Select-Trac, and Rock-Trac, with features like front-and-rear locking differentials and a disconnecting front sway bar. The Rubicon 392, with its 6.4-liter V8 engine, delivered 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, transforming the Wrangler into an off-road powerhouse.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia featured a single powertrain option: the 5.7-liter i-Force V8 engine, producing 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a lockable Torsen limited-slip center differential in 4WD models. The Sequoia's truck-based construction provided a payload capacity of around 1,300 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. Despite its weight, the Sequoia offered a smooth and stable ride on highways and handled curves with confidence. Its body-on-frame construction and ample ground clearance made it a capable off-roader, especially in the TRD Pro model with enhanced suspension. However, its fuel economy lagged behind modern standards, with ratings of 13 mpg city/17 mpg highway/15 mpg combined for RWD models.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler offered a variety of top options, including the zipper-less Sunrider soft-top and the Freedom hardtop with removable panels. The Rubicon 392 featured the Sky one-touch power top, providing a convenient open-air experience. The Wrangler's interior was functional, with limited storage space but practical features like drain plugs for easy cleaning. It provided 31.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 72.4 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia prioritized passenger comfort with spacious seating across all three rows and three-zone climate control. The interior featured ample storage options, including a large center console and door pockets. The cargo area offered 18.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, expanding to 66.6 cubic feet with the third row folded and 120.1 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded. The Sequoia's interior was designed for practicality and durability, making it suitable for families and outdoor adventures.

Technology

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler's technology offerings varied by trim level. The base Sport model featured a basic 5-inch screen, while higher trims offered a 7-inch or 8.4-inch Uconnect screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Rubicon 392 included a color TFT screen in the instrument panel and an off-road camera for enhanced trail visibility.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia's infotainment system felt outdated with its 7-inch touchscreen, but it included standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Limited trim added navigation and a 12-speaker audio system, with an optional premium audio package. While the Sequoia's technology lagged behind competitors, it featured modern LED lighting and standard safety technologies like a rear backup camera and parking sonar.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler offered optional modern driver-assistance features, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. However, these features were not standard, and the Wrangler lacked lane-departure warning. It did include a backup camera and a live tire-pressure monitoring system for off-roading.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia came equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense P suite, including pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. It also featured a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and the STAR safety system, which included stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. The Sequoia's safety features were comprehensive, providing peace of mind for drivers and passengers.
