2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews Summary

The KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty.

There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.”

But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect.

Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Reviews Summary

Designed and engineered to impress drivers regardless of the weather, road, or terrain, the new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee retains the stylish looks and unrelenting capability for which the model is legendarily known, combined with a significant upgrade in technology and sophistication. We headed for Moab, Utah to put the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee to the test, sampling a wide array of trim levels and powertrains both on and off the pavement.

2021 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

9/10

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling had evolved since its debut, with opinions softening over time. While the short grille and swept-back headlights initially divided opinions, familiarity improved its perceived proportions. The exterior's appeal varied significantly with trim levels. The base Latitude with 17-inch wheels and FWD appeared generic, while the 80th Anniversary Edition with 19-inch wheels and painted cladding offered a more refined look. The Cherokee's panoramic sunroof was a standout feature, enhancing its distinctiveness in a crowded SUV market, and it bore a resemblance to the larger Grand Cherokee from the front.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, meanwhile, embraced traditional Jeep design elements while introducing a two-row version of the previous year's Grand Cherokee L. Available in multiple trims, it offered a range of prices and features, from the basic Laredo to the luxurious Summit Reserve. The design paid homage to the classic 1963 Wagoneer, with a forward-leaning grille and tapered roof pillars. Inside, it mirrored the Grand Cherokee L, with options ranging from basic cloth seats to premium leather and advanced features in higher trims. The Grand Cherokee's styling and interior options catered to a wide array of preferences and needs.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered three engine choices. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder produced 180 horsepower, while the 3.2-liter V6 delivered 271 hp. The top-tier 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generated 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, outperforming the V6 in torque. Despite these options, acceleration was modest, with 0-60 mph times around 7.2 to 7.4 seconds. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, praised for its fuel efficiency. The Trailhawk model excelled off-road, equipped with Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control, though FWD versions were available for budget-conscious buyers.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee offered RWD or 4WD with a choice of a V6 or V8 engine. The standard 3.6-liter V6 produced 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. The optional 5.7-liter V8 delivered 357 hp and 390 lb-ft, increasing towing capacity to 7,200 pounds. Three 4WD systems were available, with Quadra-Drive II offering the most off-road capability. The Grand Cherokee used an eight-speed automatic transmission, though the dial-style shifter required acclimation. Fuel economy ranged from 17 to 21 mpg, depending on the engine and drivetrain. The Trailhawk trim excelled off-road, featuring advanced systems like Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain driving modes.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee occupied a niche between the Renegade and Grand Cherokee, competing with compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V. However, its cargo space was limited, offering 26 cubic feet with seats up and 55 cubic feet with seats folded. Passenger volume was competitive at 102 cubic feet. The interior was straightforward, with trim levels influencing material quality. The Latitude featured basic materials, while the Trailhawk and Latitude Lux offered more upscale finishes.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee prioritized driver and passenger comfort, with features like heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof. Visibility improvements enhanced driving confidence, especially off-road. Rear-seat space was tight for taller passengers, but cargo capacity was generous, with 37.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 70.8 cubic feet with seats folded. The Grand Cherokee L offered more space for those needing extra room.

Technology

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee featured the user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system, available with 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreens. It supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though only wired. A 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration were available, along with remote start. The system was praised for its intuitive controls and consistency across Stellantis brands.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasted advanced technology, including a head-up display, Night Vision, and multiple touchscreens. The Uconnect 5 system offered improved responsiveness and over-the-air updates. Most trims featured an 8.4-inch touchscreen, with a 10.1-inch option available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with Amazon Alexa and SiriusXM 360L. The optional front passenger interactive display added convenience and entertainment options.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee received mixed safety ratings. It earned "Good" scores in crashworthiness but lacked a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall rating. Standard safety features included lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control was limited to higher trims.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee featured a robust safety structure with extensive use of aluminum and high-strength steel. It offered a comprehensive suite of ADAS, including Intersection Collision Assist and Active Driving Assist, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. A hands-free version was expected in 2022, enhancing its appeal for tech-savvy drivers.
