2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews Summary

The KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty.

There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.”

But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect.

Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee.

2021 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

The BMW X5 was fully redesigned for the 2019 model year. In 2020, high-performance models were added to the mix and for 2021, the SUV’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant joins the family. All feature similar body design and utility, including a large cargo area.

2021 Jeep Cherokee

7/10

2021 BMW X5

9/10

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling had evolved since its debut, with opinions softening over time. While the short grille and swept-back headlights initially divided opinions, the design matured, appearing more proportionate. The exterior's appeal varied significantly with trim levels. The base Latitude with 17-inch wheels and FWD looked ordinary, while the 80th Anniversary Edition with 19-inch wheels and painted cladding offered a more refined appearance. The Cherokee stood out in a crowded SUV market, resembling the larger Grand Cherokee from the front, and featured an optional panoramic sunroof that enhanced its distinctiveness.

The 2021 BMW X5 was a testament to BMW's craftsmanship, maintaining the brand's signature design elements. Its recognizable kidney grille and body shape ensured it was unmistakably a BMW, though it risked blending in with other models. The X5 featured adaptive LED headlights and various trim options, including the sporty M Sport styling with body-color matched elements. Wheel sizes ranged from 19 to 22 inches, adding to its versatility. Inside, the X5's design was consistent with BMW's lineup, featuring quality materials like leather and soft-touch surfaces, though it had an abundance of black plastic.

Performance

2021 BMW X5

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered three engine options. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder produced 180 horsepower, while the 3.2-liter V-6 delivered 271 hp. The top-tier 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generated 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, outperforming the V-6 in torque. Despite these options, acceleration was modest, with 0-60 mph times around 7.2 to 7.4 seconds. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, praised for its fuel efficiency. The Trailhawk model excelled off-road, equipped with Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control, though FWD versions were available for budget-conscious buyers.

The 2021 BMW X5 offered a range of powertrains, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base model featured a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, available in RWD or AWD. The X5 M50i boasted a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp, while the X5 M reached 600 hp, or 617 hp with the Competition Package. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid combined a six-cylinder engine with a battery, achieving 389 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, offering up to 30 miles of electric range. Despite its power, the X5's steering dynamics were less engaging than expected, with a Lincoln-like ride quality.

Form and function

2021 Jeep Cherokee

2021 BMW X5

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee positioned itself between the Renegade and Grand Cherokee, competing with compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V. However, its cargo space was limited, offering 26 cubic feet with seats up and 55 cubic feet with seats folded. Passenger volume was 102 cubic feet, competitive within its class. The interior was straightforward, with trim levels influencing material quality. The Latitude featured basic materials, while the Trailhawk and Latitude Lux offered more upscale options like suede and Nappa leather.

The 2021 BMW X5 made efficient use of space, with well-placed cupholders and a wireless charging pad. Front seats were comfortable for short trips but could feel hard over time. Rear seats accommodated adults comfortably, and an optional third row was available. The split liftgate and adjustable vehicle height facilitated cargo loading. Without the third row, cargo space was ample, though slightly reduced in the xDrive45e. The doors' limited opening angle made accessing the second row challenging.

Technology

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee featured the user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system, available with 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreens. It supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though only wired. A 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration were included, along with remote start. The system was consistent across Stellantis brands, offering a seamless experience for users familiar with it.

The 2021 BMW X5 came with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay, though connectivity issues were noted. Standard features included a digital gauge cluster, 10-speaker sound system, and panoramic moonroof. Optional upgrades included a head-up display, premium audio systems, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The iDrive system required acclimation but was intuitive once mastered.

Safety

2021 BMW X5

6/10

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee received top "Good" scores in crashworthiness from the IIHS but lacked a Top Safety Pick award. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall rating. Standard safety features included lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control was limited to higher trims.

The 2021 BMW X5 offered extensive standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. However, the Driving Assistance Professional Package had issues with lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control, especially in bright sunlight or rain. The X5 received mostly Good ratings from the IIHS and a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
