2021 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

When Acura last redesigned the RDX for the 2019 model year, the company began a transformation that is now accelerating with the debut of the all-new 2021 TLX sedan and soon-to-arrive 2022 MDX SUV. Adopting the company’s latest exterior styling and interior design philosophies, as well as the completely rethought True Touch Interface infotainment system, the third-generation RDX confirmed Acura’s intent to return to the performance ethos that guided the brand during its early years. Now, according to Acura, the RDX is the bestselling model in its segment and one of the bestselling luxury vehicles in America. It is deserving of this stature.

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

Look and feel

2021 Acura RDX

9/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2021 Acura RDX, especially with the A-Spec Package, presented a sleek and sporty appearance without excessive blacked-out trim or aggressive performance cues. Its design was subtle yet effective, conveying a sense of sportiness without overpromising on performance. Unlike rugged off-road SUVs, the RDX avoided oversized skid plates and bulging fender flares, focusing instead on daily driving and road-tripping.

Inside, the A-Spec Package enhanced the RDX with sporty elements like front sport seats with simulated suede inserts, a sport steering wheel, and red ambient lighting. The interior maintained a sporty look with quality materials and a unique gauge cluster, though the red-on-silver markings were hard to read. The RDX A-Spec offered a distinctive cabin experience, though the True Touchpad Interface (TTI) infotainment system was a point of contention.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from the Tacoma pickup, featuring a rugged trapezoidal grille and upright fascia. However, its side profile introduced a softer character line, adding unnecessary visual weight. The rear design echoed the front grille, but the overall look felt disjointed compared to more cohesive competitors like the Kia Telluride.

Inside, the Highlander Hybrid's asymmetrical dash and metallic styling element added visual interest. The infotainment touchscreen was positioned high for reduced distraction. The Bronze Edition featured light grey fabric upholstery with a triangle motif, which seemed out of place and prone to dirt. Softex synthetic leather was used throughout, but genuine leather was reserved for higher trims. The third row had more hard plastics, typical for family SUVs, but was less comfortable.

Performance

2021 Acura RDX

9/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2021 Acura RDX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It featured a 10-speed automatic transmission and optional Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), enhancing handling by distributing power to the rear wheels. The Integrated Dynamics System allowed drivers to choose between driving modes, adjusting powertrain response and steering effort. A-Spec models had exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels and performance tires, though adaptive dampers were not available.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid used a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine with 243 horsepower, paired with a CVT and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive was available via an electric motor for the rear axle. It reached 60 mph in just over 8 seconds. The hybrid powertrain provided a quick initial response, but the engine's drone was noticeable under heavy acceleration. The ride was soft, with a quiet cabin, making it comfortable for family trips.

Form and function

2021 Acura RDX

8/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

6/10

The 2021 Acura RDX offered impressive passenger and cargo space for a compact SUV. Front seats were comfortable with 12-way power adjustment, heating, and ventilation. Rear-seat comfort was compromised by a low cushion and excessive recline angle. Cargo space measured 29.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 58.9 cubic feet with seats folded. Additional storage compartments were available under the cargo floor.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's front seats were well-cushioned, though the driver's armrest was awkwardly positioned. Storage options included trays and a large center armrest bin. The second row was spacious, with sliding and reclining captain's chairs. The third row was less accommodating, suitable for children or short trips. Cargo space was 16 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 48.4 cubic feet with seats folded, and 84.3 cubic feet with the second row stowed.

Technology

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The 2021 Acura RDX featured the True Touchpad Interface, which mirrored the screen for input but required adjustment for users familiar with traditional touchpads. It included physical controls for climate and stereo, smartphone integration, and a 16-speaker premium audio system. The TTI system was an improvement over Lexus's approach but still not ideal.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch option for higher trims. The system was responsive, with physical shortcut buttons and climate controls. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Higher trims offered navigation and a JBL audio system.

Safety

2021 Acura RDX

8/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

The 2021 Acura RDX included AcuraWatch, with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert required an upgrade. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though frontal-impact and rollover ratings were four stars.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. The systems generally worked well but needed fine-tuning for smoother operation.
