2020 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Americans love the Toyota RAV4. The compact crossover SUV is the most popular vehicle in the U.S. that isn’t a pickup truck, and when you live with one for a while, it’s easy to understand why so many people buy a RAV4. Available with a gasoline 4-cylinder or a gas-electric hybrid powertrain (covered as a separate model), and in a wide range of configurations including sporty XSE, luxurious Limited, and rugged Adventure, the 2020 RAV4 meets a variety of customer wants and needs.

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid Reviews Summary

The 2021 Lexus NX compact SUV is showing its age. It’s not an inherently bad vehicle, but with a design that dates back to the 2015 model year, it’s struggling to keep pace with fresher competition—including the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln Corsair, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60—and can’t justify its positioning as a premium product.

Lexus offers the gasoline-only NX 300 and the NX 300h hybrid, but we’ll focus on the latter for this review. The big news for the 2021 Lexus NX 300h is a new F Sport Black Line special edition, which adds sportier F Sport styling features that normally aren’t available on the hybrid. It also comes with a matching two-piece set of Zero Halliburton luggage. Other changes include additional standard driver aids and "low-profile" windshield wipers.

We tested the Black Line for this review, but with production limited to 1,000 units, it will likely be sold out by the time you read this. However, it’s mechanically similar to the regular-production NX 300h hybrid trim levels—base and Luxury.

Look and feel

2020 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

7/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 had undergone a significant redesign in 2019, giving it a bolder and more angular appearance. This transformation aimed to match its proven durability with a tougher look. The Adventure trim improved off-roading capabilities with a torque-vectoring AWD system and multiple driving modes. The TRD Off-Road trim further enhanced this with specialized wheels, tires, and suspension, offering a versatile ride. The interior featured TRD logos, rubber mats, and a mix of quality materials, though some plastics appeared inexpensive.

In contrast, the 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid maintained a familiar yet distinct design with sharp edges and a streamlined profile. Despite its luxury status, it shared a platform with the older RAV4, making it a step behind in engineering. The F Sport Black Line model added sporty elements like a mesh grille and dark wheels. Inside, the design felt radical initially but became familiar over time. The Black Line treatment included unique upholstery and aluminum pedals, though material quality seemed more mainstream than luxury.

Performance

2020 Toyota RAV4

7/10

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 featured a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid model offered 219 horsepower and up to 40 mpg but wasn't available in the TRD Off-Road trim. The 8-speed automatic transmission generally performed well, though it occasionally struggled with gear selection. The TRD Off-Road model excelled with its torque-vectoring AWD, multi-terrain settings, and 8.6 inches of ground clearance, making it adept off-road. However, fuel economy averaged 23.4 mpg, below the EPA estimate.

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid combined a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor, delivering 194 horsepower and standard AWD. Despite its sporty appearance, it wasn't a performance vehicle, with a 0-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds. The hybrid system prioritized efficiency over excitement, with a clunky transition between power sources. The sport-tuned suspension improved handling without sacrificing comfort, but steering felt numb. Drive modes offered minimal impact on performance, with Eco mode further reducing acceleration.

Form and function

2020 Toyota RAV4

9/10

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 offered easy access with well-placed seating and an 8-way adjustable driver's seat. Rear legroom was generous, and interior storage was ample, with 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space expanding to 69.8 cubic feet with seats folded. The TRD Off-Road trim included SofTex upholstery and optional heated and ventilated seats. A robust roof rack and optional hands-free power liftgate added utility.

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid had limited headroom and rear legroom, making the rear seats feel cramped. Front seats provided excellent support, with 10-way power adjustment and available heated and ventilated options. The sloping roofline and thick pillars hindered rear visibility, though exterior mirrors helped. Cargo space was limited to 16.8 cubic feet, expanding to 53.7 cubic feet with seats folded. Power-folding seats and a power liftgate were available but not standard.

Technology

2020 Toyota RAV4

10/10

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

4/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 featured a user-friendly infotainment system with a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The TRD Off-Road trim included an 8-inch display with minimal glare issues. The system impressed with voice-recognition technology and optional upgrades like wireless charging and a 360-degree camera.

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid's infotainment system was a weak point, with an 8-inch display and a cumbersome Remote Touch Interface touchpad. While it supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system felt dated with text-heavy menus. An eight-speaker audio system was standard, with a 14-speaker Mark Levinson system available on higher trims.

Safety

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 came with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, including features like Pre-Collision System, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure alert. It received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, with top marks for crash protection and ADAS performance.

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It included Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 with features like forward-collision warning and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were newly standard.
