Who Makes Lotus Cars?
Lotus was founded 1952 by Colin Chapman as a racing team. This famous design ethos was, “Simplify, and add lightness.” In addition to Formula 1 and Formula 2 race cars, it began building road cars that owners could take to the track. This was the makeup of its lineup for many years, and later included higher-end luxury sports cars. Lotus was owned by General Motors from 1986 to 1993, at which point it was acquired by an Italian holding company. From 1996 to 2017 it was owned by Malaysian automaker Proton. From 2017 onward, Geely has owned a 51% controlling stake in Lotus. It builds cars in the UK and in China. The latter is focused on new Lotus EV models.
