Currently in its seventh generation, the BMW 7 Series has long served as the German automaker’s flagship sedan. While gas-powered 7 Series models remain on sale, the i7 variant ditches the engine in favor of a fully electric powertrain. For 2027, two versions of the electric luxury sedan will be available: the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive.

What’s New for the 2027 BMW i7
While not entirely new, the BMW i7 is heavily refreshed for the 2027 model year. Technologies inherited from BMW’s forward-thinking Neue Klasse models have been incorporated, including an infotainment system featuring BMW Panoramic iDrive and running BMW Operating System X software, the BMW Panoramic Vision head-up display that stretches across the entirety of the windshield, and interior lighting and animations displayed on everything from the infotainment screen to the car’s LED-filled door sills.
Design
There’s no mistaking the 2027 BMW i7 for anything else on the road. The glowing kidney grilles may have slimmed down compared to earlier i7 models, but they still make a statement. Thin new light clusters slash their way across either side of the blunt fascia (the actual headlights are mostly hidden from view when they aren’t lit up), and the rear taillight design is also new. M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional options give the 2027 i7 a sportier flair with an M Aerodynamics package that alters the front and rear ends, adds side skirts, and includes unique wheels measuring either 20 or 21 inches. Also new for 2027 is a BMW Individual Dual-Finish paint concept that features a matte lower paint finish paired with a hand-applied metallic finish above, and they're separated by a hand-drawn Coach Line. BMW says it takes more than 75 hours to complete the paint job.
Powertrain
BMW offers two powertrain options in the 2027 i7. In i7 50 form, a pair of electric motors produces 449 horsepower and can push the i7 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The i7 60 ups the ante with 536 hp and a 0–60 time of 4.6 seconds. Both versions feature xDrive, BMW’s high-tech all-wheel-drive (AWD) technology. The 2027 i7’s battery pack is all new; whereas older i7s used prismatic cells, the new i7 uses cylindrical cells similar to those used in recent Neue Klasse models. The new cells are around 20% more energy-dense and allow faster charge times. BMW quotes range estimates of 354 to 373 miles for the i7 50 and 344 to 362 miles for the i7 60, and says the 2027 i7 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 28 minutes.
Interior
BMW blends modern and traditional materials inside the 2027 i7. While there are digital screens across most of the dashboard, the seats are covered in the buyer’s choice of many different single-shade or dual-tone leather options, with various stitching and quilting patterns available. Trim options range from high-gloss or open-pore woods to suede-like Alcantara and carbon fiber with silver thread and piano-black accents. BMW offers multiple packages for those who want to be driven rather than drive themselves. The Luxury Rear Seating Package includes power-adjustable seats with ventilation and massage functions. The Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package takes things further, with an electric reclining seat and footrest, a massive digital theater screen that folds down from the roof, and a unique rear console armrest with cupholders and additional storage.
Technology
A 17.9-inch Central Display, with an interesting shape BMW calls a free-cut design, dominates the center of the dashboard. BMW Panoramic iDrive technology and the BMW Operating System X software support touch functions and allow drivers to customize the display with the widgets and sub-menus they use most. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. BMW Panoramic Vision puts useful information directly across the full width of the lower part of the windshield and the BMW 3D Head Up Display projects additional information above the Panoramic Vision portion, including navigation instructions. Up to seven users can program individual settings and sign in with their own BMW ID. The latest version of BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant is programmed to accept natural voice interactions without the need for explicitly defined voice commands, using a unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) Large Language Model that integrates Amazon Alexa+. BMW is using the new i7 (and the rest of the 7 Series lineup) to introduce its new Passenger Screen. The 14.6-inch screen is designed to provide entertainment options for the front-seat passenger, including video streaming and TV programs, gaming, and music. Rear-seat passengers have access to the optional Theater Screen, an 8K touchscreen measuring 31.3 inches. The rear screen also supports Zoom video calls.
