For those who like the idea of owning a well-engineered German sedan that doesn’t break the bank, but has a bit more oomph than the standard Volkswagen Jetta, we have good news. The VW Jetta GLI is back for 2026 with a turbocharged engine, a slick-shifting (optional) six-speed manual transmission, and a chassis tuned for enthusiastic driving. Plus, with its four-door sedan shape, the Jetta GLI is just as practical as it is fun to drive.

What’s New for the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
The Jetta GLI received a worthwhile refresh for the 2025 model year, so it's little surprise that the 2026 edition sees only minor changes. The previous year's styling updates still look fresh, and the new 8-inch infotainment screen sticks around, too. New for 2026 is a standard premium VW audio system with eight speakers and a new set of buttons on the steering wheel.
Design
The Jetta GLI stands apart from more mundane versions of VW’s compact sedan by virtue of its sportier exterior. Both the upper and lower honeycomb-shaped grille elements are blacked out, while red exterior trim and unique badging call out the car’s performance cred. At the rear, GLI models feature a black honeycomb diffuser and a wider dual exhaust setup than other Jetta models. The GLI gets a unique set of 18-inch machined alloy wheels, and 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels are offered as part of an optional Black Package.
Powertrain
Power for the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, all sent to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. All Jetta GLI models benefit from an electronic limited-slip differential that improves handling. With the six-speed manual, VW estimates the Jetta GLI will return 26 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. The DSG automatic loses one mile per gallon on the highway.

Interior
Volkswagen uses unique Grigio-colored (a dark silvery shade) perforated Vienna leather seating surfaces for the Jetta GLI with red contrast stitching. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard, and GLI models with manual transmissions get a leather-wrapped shift knob. GLI models with the DSG automatic feature an aluminum shift knob. Pedals and interior scuff plates are covered in stainless steel, and a 10-color ambient lighting system is standard.
Technology
All 2026 VW Jetta GLI models feature a 10.25-inch fully configurable digital instrument cluster with four different views, one of which is a full navigation map view. In addition, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display sits at the center of the dashboard, slightly canted toward the driver. Volkswagen’s wireless App-Connect is standard equipment and provides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. All 2026 Jetta GLI models feature a Volkswagen Premium Audio system with eight speakers.
