The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid takes the hybrid standard-bearer a step further by adding a battery for a viable electric range, along with the Prius’s excellent efficiency. It takes on rivals such as the Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid, the Honda Civic Hybrid, and even the regular Prius hybrid.

What’s New for the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid
For 2026, Toyota adds a Nightshade Edition based on the XSE grade. It features black accents on the badges, door sills, door handles, and bumper trim, along with black 19-inch alloy wheels. The Prius Plug-In Nightshade Edition comes in Karashi, Wind Chill Pearl, and Midnight Black Metallic paint colors.
Design
Taking on a wind-cheating wedge shape expected from a sports car, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid looks downright sporty. The rising hood leads into a steeply sloped windshield that continues at almost the same angle, and the roofline flows back into a short deck. A full glass roof is standard on the top model, and a solar-charging roof is available. The low nose has a slight grin, thanks to a channel that leads into the bracket-shaped headlights. The sides are rounded, and the rear end features a subtly integrated spoiler that cuts off the wind at the top and sides for cleaner airflow. The 17-inch wheels on the base model improve efficiency, but the other models look better with the 19-inch options, which fill out the wheel wells more completely.
Powertrain
The Prius Plug-In Hybrid uses Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. It teams a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Total system output is 220 horsepower, and that power goes exclusively to the front wheels. A 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery provides 44 miles of electric driving range for the base model and 39 miles otherwise. The base model is rated at 127 MPGe by the EPA and 52 mpg combined when the electric range runs out. The others are rated at 114 MPGe and 48 mpg combined.

Interior
The base Prius Plug-In Hybrid comes with cloth upholstery and manual front seat adjustments. Other models feature synthetic-leather upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Heated front seats are standard on all except the base version, and the top trim gets driver’s seat memory and ventilated front seats. Heated rear seats are optional.
The hatchback body style gives the Prius Plug-In Hybrid decent cargo space, but the low profile prevents generous space. With the rear seats up, it has 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space—more than a sedan’s trunk—and that increases modestly to 26.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.
Technology
Toyota equips the Prius Plug-In Hybrid with a standard 7-inch digital instrument cluster mounted atop the dash rather than in a binnacle behind the steering wheel. The standard infotainment touchscreen measures 8 inches, but a 12.3-inch version is standard on the top model and available on some other models. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless smartphone charging is standard on all but the base model.
A digital key comes with a Remote Connect app subscription. The standard audio system has six speakers, and an eight-speaker JBL system is standard on the top model.
