The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV doesn’t get the same level of attention that big names like the Toyota RAV4 PHEV and Honda CR-V Hybrid do, but it offers a host of compelling features, a nicer-than-expected interior, and strong all-electric range numbers.

What’s New for the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-in
While the gas-only Outlander received no substantial changes for 2026, the plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, model gained several improvements. Mitsubishi fitted a larger battery pack, improving the SUV’s range to 38 miles. The 2026 Outlander PHEV also received a revised suspension system, massaged interior and exterior styling, and new features, such as heated and ventilated front seats and an improved wireless phone charging tray. The SUV gained better sound deadening for 2026 as well, making it much quieter inside.
Design
The Outlander PHEV follows its gas-only counterpart’s styling, which means a busy front end with upper LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and the headlights mounted lower in the front fascia. The rest of the SUV looks surprisingly normal, however, leaving the front end as the Outlander’s only real wild streak.
Powertrain
Mitsubishi equips a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that make a combined 248 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are standard. While it’s a bit livelier than the gas model, the Outlander PHEV is far from quick or engaging, though the automaker did a good job with the braking system, giving it a natural feel with none of the jerkiness or disjointed sensations that some have.

Interior
The 2026 Outlander PHEV comes standard with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and seating for up to seven people. Synthetic and genuine leather upholstery options are available. While the third-row seat is a nice option to have in a pinch, it’s too small for adults and can be hard to access. Cargo space is decent, however, with 11.7 cubic feet behind the third row, 33.5 behind the second row, and up to 79.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat.
Technology
Mitsubishi equips an 8-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM radio, voice commands, USB-A and C ports, six speakers, and Bluetooth. More expensive configurations receive a 9-inch display, navigation, wireless charging, a Bose audio system, additional USB ports, and HD radio.
