Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) offer a good compromise for drivers wanting the benefits of an EV without the drawbacks of range. The Kia Sportage PHEV is a solid option in its class, offering 34 miles of electric range and a surprisingly engaging powertrain with good power and torque.

What’s New for the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid Plug-In
The Sportage Hybrid Plug-In gained a few updates for the 2026 model year. Kia revised its front lighting system, giving it new amber LED daytime running lights. The SUV also gained seven horsepower over the year before, thanks to a bump in its electric motor’s output.
Design
Kia’s recent design updates have given the Sportage PHEV a sportier, more aggressive look than before. It prominently features the brand’s signature “tiger’s nose” grille, and the vertical amber LED lights give it a dramatic look. The new taillights feature transparent lenses and a unique “Star Map” lighting design. While the Sportage Hybrid received a range of new wheel designs for 2026, the Hybrid Plug-In did not.
Powertrain
The 2026 Sportage Hybrid Plug-In comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine for 268 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, and the Sportage PHEV can tow up to 2,000 pounds with a braked trailer. Kia quotes two hours to fully recharge the PHEV’s battery on a 240-volt outlet.

Interior
The Sportage Hybrid Plug-In seats five people on standard synthetic leather upholstery. Other standard features include heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The top X-Line Prestige trim keeps synthetic leather, but it gets heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. Cargo space is decent, at up to 34.5 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 65.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.
Technology
Kia equips a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, along with six speakers, wireless phone charging, front and rear USB-C ports, Bluetooth, and more. The higher trim adds a Harman Kardon sound system with a subwoofer, navigation, voice commands, and a digital key system. Kia’s infotainment system isn’t as flashy as others, but that simplicity makes it easy to use and less distracting while driving.
