What Makes The Ram 1500 A Great Family Truck?

The Ram 1500 gives families something rare in the truck world: genuine versatility without asking them to pick a lane. Four powertrain options cover the full spectrum — a workhorse V6, the crowd-pleasing return of the Hemi V8, and two versions of the Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six that deliver up to 540 horsepower — so there's a Ram for the parent hauling a camper and for the one doing school pickup.
The cabin, particularly in mid-range and higher trims, is a cut above what most people expect from a truck, with available open-pore wood, leather surfaces that rival European luxury cars, and a vertically oriented touchscreen flanked by physical controls you can actually use while wearing gloves.
Ram's Multifunction Tailgate, lockable and waterproof RamBox cargo compartments, and a center console big enough to swallow a laptop or a purse round out a package that works just as hard on Saturday morning errands as it does on a job site.
Why Did The Ram 1500 Win The CarGurus Confidence Award For Best Truck For Families?
The Ram 1500 won because it earned the highest combined marks in the areas that matter most for families. It edged out a fiercely competitive field of 31 eligible trucks in one of the tightest races across all four of our award categories. It posted among the highest marks in Safety and Form & Function — the two dimensions we weighted most heavily for this family-focused award — while its breadth of configurations meant our panel couldn't find a family it wouldn't fit.
In a category where the margins between the top contenders were razor-thin, the Ram's combination of refinement, capability, and adaptability gave it the edge.
What Did The CarGurus Team Say About The Ram 1500?

"The Ram 1500 has no easy task. Staying ahead of the ever-improving Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, and GMC Sierra — some of the most popular vehicles on the planet — without alienating an unimpeachably loyal audience is tough work. Yet steady improvements to an already compelling package have kept the Ram 1500 at the top of our scoring charts and top of mind amongst our staff. This is the truck for families, no matter what that family looks like. The Hemi V8 is back, the Hurricane twin-turbo six-cylinder is a riot, the styling is timeless, the functionality unmatched, the warranty is robust (10 years or 100,000 miles), and there's a huge variety of trims and price points." — David Undercoffler, Head of Content, Autolist & CarGurus Canada
What Were We Looking For In The Best Family Truck?
Best Trucks for Families highlights trucks that not only offer the unrivaled practicality and functionality of a pickup truck, but also — given that so many American households use at least one truck as the family's daily driver — the model best suited for everyday use. Safety and Form & Function were paramount here.
Honorable Mentions
Ford F-150 (Runner-Up):

The perennial best-seller backs up its popularity with substance: six available powertrains, three cab styles, three bed lengths, and one of the highest Safety scores among all the trucks we evaluated. A generous suite of driver-assistance tech and thoughtful details like the Pro Access tailgate — which swings open even with a trailer attached — make it an easy daily driver for families.
Honda Ridgeline (Runner-Up):

The Ridgeline did so well in our truck category precisely because of its many un-truck-like characteristics. It's got the interior space and smooth ride quality of a crossover (because it's based on one, unlike nearly all other trucks), and clever storage everywhere (including underneath the bed in a deft sleight-of-hand), to say nothing of the actual truck bed. Plus, its truck bona fides (towing, payload) are still robust enough to make you proud next time you have a boat to move.
How Did We Choose The Best Truck For Families? (Methodology)
The CarGurus Confidence Awards — Best Truck for Families 2026 was determined through a multi-step, data-driven process designed to balance editorial expertise with real-world market conditions:
Eligibility filtering: To qualify, a truck needed at least 1,000 units of national dealer inventory (ensuring the vehicle is widely available to shoppers) and an average listing price no more than 25% above the manufacturer's suggested retail price. The delta threshold for trucks was set higher than other categories (25% vs. 15%) because dealer markups are endemic in the truck segment — more than half of all trucks in our dataset list above MSRP. A tighter cap would have excluded some of the most popular and widely purchased trucks in America. This process yielded 31 eligible trucks.
Weighted scoring: Each eligible truck was scored by our editorial team across six dimensions: Look & Feel, Performance, Form & Function, Tech Level, Safety, and Cost-Effectiveness. For this family-focused category, we applied the following weights: Safety (25%), Form & Function (25%), Look & Feel (15%), Tech Level (15%), Performance (10%), and Cost-Effectiveness (10%). Safety and Form & Function were weighted highest because family truck buyers prioritize occupant protection, active safety systems, cabin space, storage solutions, and practical daily utility.
Ranked ballot vote: Our editorial panel each independently ranked their top five trucks. Points were assigned on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale (#1 pick = 5 points, #5 pick = 1 point) and summed across all voters. The highest point total determined the winner, with tiebreakers resolved by: (1) most first-place votes, (2) higher AI Weighted Score, and (3) higher national inventory.
