A more powerful, top-shelf Tiguan puts Volkswagen on the heels of luxury automakers.

Redesigned for the 2025 model year, the current third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan gives shoppers an attractive compact crossover with modern styling and a comfortable interior. While it made Volkswagen competitive, there was little about the new Tiguan that helped it stand out in an incredibly crowded market. That changes for 2026 with the introduction of a more powerful SEL R-Line Turbo trim level. The new turbo Tiguan delivers outstanding performance, and its top-shelf interior will help shoppers feel like they’re driving something truly special.

Verdict: With regards to performance, tech, and interior luxury, the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan’s SEL R-Line Turbo trim level is outstanding. Lower-tier trim levels lose the luster, though, and that puts the 2026 Tiguan in a curious position. Shoppers ready to spend $45,000 on a compact crossover will love the Tiguan; those shopping at the less expensive trim levels may prefer the competition, particularly if fuel-economy is a priority.

Now in its third generation, the current Volkswagen Tiguan has clearly taken styling cues from VW’s electric lineup. The traditional grille, which previously featured narrow chrome rails stretched across the width of the car’s front, has been replaced with an LED lightbar positioned above a faux lower-fascia featuring a honeycomb design. Flanking the honeycomb are two large air intakes but, otherwise, the new Tiguan’s front end is nearly as sealed-off as the all-electric ID.4’s.

Narrow headlights mark each of the front corners, and a chrome strip connects them to the central VW logo. On the top SEL R-Line Turbo trim, the logo is illuminated and the chrome bar is traded for an LED light bar. At the rear, the same honeycomb pattern from the front graces the rear bumper, and LED taillights featuring Volkswagen’s ID.Light signature elements add a nice, upscale touch to the overall look.

Volkswagen shortened the front and rear overhangs on the third-generation Tiguan, but its wheelbase measures the same 109.9 inches as the 2024 model’s. The d-pillar is also more sloped than before, which does impact total interior cargo capacity. Shoppers get 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels on the base S trim level (18-inch wheels are a $300 option). The SE trim upgrades to 18-inch wheels, while the SE R-Line and SEL R-Line Turbo receive 19- and 20-inch wheels, respectively. There are a few interesting colors, notably Monterey Blue and Avocado Green, but the rest of the palette is a range of neutral tones. Two whites, a silver, a gray, and a black will all blend in with traffic, and the very earthy Sandstone paint job looks nice, if still understated.

Inside, not all Tiguans are the same. The base S trim receives cloth seats with a new-for-2026 design featuring embossed lettering, while the SE and SE R-Line trim levels get leatherette. A panoramic sunroof also joins the mix at the SE R-Line level. Our SEL R-Line Turbo test vehicle looked a cut above the rest of the lineup. With two-tone Varenna leather upholstery and quilted stitching, the most-expensive Tiguan looks like it could comfortably wear an Audi badge, at least on the inside. A lovely walnut trim piece laid in the dashboard adds some natural warmth to the environment, too.

A tablet-style touchscreen sits at center stage. It measures 12.9 inches in the S, SE, and SE R-Line Black trim levels, but the SEL R-Line Turbo gets a 15-inch version. A digital instrument panel measuring 10.25 inches, however, is standard across the lineup. Overall, the dashboard has a minimalist look, largely because so many functions are packed within the touchscreen. Further, a column-mounted gear selector frees up valuable console space.

In lower trims, the Tiguan blends in with the crowd. Pay full freight for a top-of-the-line model, however, and Volkswagen delivers an impressive interior that exceeds most of the competition.
