The 2026 Nissan Frontier deserves more consideration than it gets, but it still has some big flaws.
The Frontier is built on bones that date back more than two decades. Nissan re-skinned this midsize pickup truck for the 2022 model year, carrying over its relatively new powertrain and primarily changing only what you can see and touch, which is why it drives more like an old-school truck than most of its rivals. Nevertheless, Nissan has continually improved the Frontier, a process that continues for the 2026 model year with extra standard equipment for some models and new option packages.
Verdict: We like the 2026 Nissan Frontier despite its old-school nature. It feels solid, it's simple, it exudes quality, and it's reasonably fuel efficient. Plus, it can tow more than a Toyota Tacoma. An obtuse digital assistant and a concerning crash-test rating are primary reasons to consider alternatives.
Nissan offers the 2026 Frontier in S, SV, Pro-X, and Pro-4X trim levels. Only the Frontier S comes in both King Cab (extended cab) and crew-cab styles, and only the Frontier Pro-4X has standard four-wheel drive (4WD); other models are rear-wheel drive (RWD) by default. A 5-foot cargo bed is standard, with a 6-foot bed available on the SV and Pro-4X. Prices range from $33,845 to $43,565, including the $1,695 destination charge.
A new Dark Armor option package debuts for the Frontier SV for 2026. Predictably, it adds black wheels and blacked-out detailing inside and out. The SV trim level is also available with a new All-Weather Package that includes dual-zone automatic climate control, remote-engine start, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The contents of the All-Weather Package are newly standard for the Pro-4X, which is the model we tested for this review. It had extra-cost Boulder Gray Pearl paint, a Pro Convenience Package, and a Pro Premium Package, bumping the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) to $48,735 with destination.
If nothing else, the Frontier Pro-4X looks rugged with its black nose, bold wheels, and big overfenders. Red recovery hooks and an aluminum front skid plate ensure everyone knows this is the Frontier that goes off-roading, although we could live without the black trim panel stretching across the tailgate.
Inside, a mix of red accents, gloss-black detailing, and purposeful grab handles underscores the Pro-4X’s position as the off-road performer in the lineup. The driver and passenger face a dashboard with a traditional control layout and simple switchgear that’s easy to use when you’re wearing gloves. Nissan thinks large knobs, sizable buttons, and clear control markings are appropriate for a pickup truck, and that’s an approach we can stand behind 100 percent.
Modern tech exists where it makes sense, such as the new-for-2026 control cluster for the truck’s different Terrain modes, the 7-inch digital driver display nestled between the analog gauges, and the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2026 Nissan Frontier isn’t the only midsize pickup truck with a standard six-cylinder engine, as the Honda Ridgeline is also so equipped. However, the Frontier’s 3.8-liter V6 is more powerful, supplying 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
In a segment where the most popular models have switched to turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the Frontier’s V6 is refreshingly familiar. Geared to deliver a stout response right off the line, it's refined, sounds good when accelerating, and makes the Nissan feel powerful in daily driving.
Running with RWD, the Frontier Pro-4X averaged 18.3 mpg on our Southern California test loop, beating the EPA estimate of 18 mpg combined (although that rating likely incorporates 4WD running). It also proved more fuel efficient than the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which we recently tested on the same route (although we tested those trucks in Automatic 4WD guises). The Pro-4X is slightly less efficient than other Frontier models, which are rated at 19 mpg combined with 4WD and 21 mpg combined with RWD.
The Frontier can’t tow as much as the Chevy or the Canyon. The trucks from General Motors can handle up to 7,700 pounds of trailer, while the Nissan’s towing capacity tops out at 7,150 pounds, but that’s still better than the Tacoma’s maximum tow rating of 6,500 pounds. As far as the payload rating is concerned, the Frontier can handle up to 1,590 pounds, depending on the configuration, but that falls short of the maximum rating for most competitors.
Nissan equips the Pro-4X with standard 4WD, all-terrain tires, Bilstein off-road shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, front and underbody skid plates, and a Terrain mode selector, while red recovery hooks protrude from either side of the shiny aluminum front skid plate.
Unlike some midsize trucks, the Frontier doesn’t offer an automatic 4WD setting. The shift-on-the-fly system is easy enough to use, and the Frontier easily dispatched deeply rutted terrain running in its four-wheel drive 4-Hi mode. The stiff suspension tossed occupants around, but that’s to be expected in that type of situation.
On the road, the Pro-4X effortlessly soaked up speed humps. Speed bumps caused significant structural shudders, and when traveling over mid-curve pavement heaves and divots at speed, the Frontier feels more skittish than rivals. Over any imperfect pavement, this Nissan rides like a classic pickup truck, so buyers looking for a smooth ride should check out a Ridgeline. Nevertheless, the Frontier conveys a certain sense of indestructibility. It removes concerns about vehicle damage associated with curbs, parking blocks, and other street furniture.
Hydraulic power steering (as opposed to the electric assist that’s now the industry norm) requires some muscle, and anyone who suffers chronic shoulder pain won’t like it. On a twisty mountain road, the Frontier performed better than expected. There was more vertical body motion than we’d like over some humps, but the truck’s suspension managed body roll reasonably well, the Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires offered surprisingly good grip, and the brakes withstood abuse.
Freeway driving was surprisingly free of road noise. Only a whisper of wind noise intruded upon the cabin, with the faint note of the 3.8-liter V6 humming in the background. The truck bounced a bit over some bridges and transitions, but otherwise seemed an agreeable long-distance runner.
A dual-zone automatic climate control system carries over from last year's Frontier Pro-4X, accompanied by a newly standard eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote engine starting. Those upgrades make it a more appealing cold-weather companion, while our test truck’s Pro Premium Package added leather upholstery and a power sunroof.
We found the driver’s seat supportive for longer stints, particularly for thigh support, and the Pro-4X felt just as comfortable after a couple of hours of driving as when we first got in. The back seat is another story—cramped, with an uncomfortable backrest angle, it’s not a place for adults to spend much time. Nissan doesn’t provide rear air conditioning vents for passengers, either, though the Pro-4X has USB charging ports and an optional 120-volt electrical outlet.
Front-seat storage space is good, from the dash-top tray and bottle holders in the door panels to the optional wireless smartphone charger and the center storage bin. In the back of the cab, the rear seat flips up to reveal underseat storage on the right half of the floor. Alternatively, you can fold down the seat back to create a level loading area.
In addition to the Pro Premium Package, our test truck had the Pro Convenience Package, which provides a spray-on bedliner, adjustable Utili-track cargo tie-down system, LED under-rail bed lighting, and a 120-volt power outlet in the bed. It also includes a hitch and wiring harness to ready the Frontier for towing.
Instead of a fully digital instrument cluster, the Frontier has a smaller 7-inch digital driver display located between analog gauges, and it’s easy to cycle through menus, choose settings, and more using the steering-wheel controls.
There's a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the dashboard, and our test truck included wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and NissanConnect connected services including access to a Wi-Fi hotspot. A wireless smartphone charger is part of the Pro Convenience Package, while the Pro Premium Package adds a door-to-door navigation system and a 10-speaker Fender audio system.
We’re big fans of Fender systems, and this one did not disappoint. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same of the infotainment system’s obtuse digital voice assistant. Even when following the instructions on the display, we had trouble getting it to interpret spoken commands, and we ended up just using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to preserve our sanity.
Our test truck included several helpful standard and available driver-assistance systems, but nothing groundbreaking. The list of standard features included automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, and rear parking sensors. Additionally, the Pro Convenience Package added a surround-view camera system with moving object detection and an off-road camera mode.
Nissan’s ProPilot Assist highway driving aid, which pairs adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist, is unavailable on the Frontier, and neither is lane-keep assist. We liked the lane-departure warning system, which vibrates the steering wheel to issue an alert. It had some trouble discerning lane lines on a rural two-lane road in a busy farming region, but that’s not unusual on that stretch of the test loop.
In moderate freeway traffic, the adaptive cruise control reacted smoothly to other motorists cutting into the gap ahead. Also, the blind-spot monitors saved us from making a wrong move in traffic when a vehicle to the left of the truck was totally invisible in the driver’s side exterior mirror.
The 2026 Frontier received a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The federal agency also gave the Frontier a five-star side-crash rating, and the three-star rollover rating is not uncommon for trucks, although the three-star front-crash rating is more concerning.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) offers a more favorable outlook, with a mix of “Good” and “Acceptable” ratings. However, the IIHS had not released results for the tougher small overlap, frontal-impact crash test at the time of writing.
The 2026 Nissan Frontier has the lowest base price in its segment except for the Toyota Tacoma, which undercuts it by $105 (including the destination charge). Additionally, the Toyota includes two years of complimentary scheduled services, has higher fuel economy ratings with its turbo-four and hybrid powertrains, holds its value better over time, and includes a longer 6-foot bed. That makes the Tacoma the more cost-effective choice by some margin.
As far as ownership benefits go, Nissan offers a one-year trial subscription to NissanConnect Premium connected services, but otherwise, the warranty, perks, and enticements are unremarkable. Discounts and low-rate financing appear to be the value drivers at the time of writing.
Ultimately, choosing a Nissan Frontier is cost-effective only if you want that excellent V6 engine or you simply don’t want to drive the same truck as everyone else. Still, there is an authenticity to the Frontier that is diluted in some of its rivals. Add Nissan’s sense of solidity, quality, and durability, and the Frontier deserves more consideration than it gets.
