The all-new ES 350h unofficially assumes Lexus' flagship luxury sedan role
The midsize Lexus ES is fully redesigned for 2026, with a larger footprint, modern styling, and both hybrid and all-electric variants. Among the few remaining rivals, it's the sensible and affordable choice, with very few drawbacks.
Verdict: While the Lexus ES 350h may not be all that exciting to drive, it more than makes up for it with a glassy-smooth ride quality, a quiet cabin, and a starting price that undercuts its German rivals by a sizable margin. As good as the ES 350h hybrid may be, we suggest checking out the all-electric ES 350e as well.
For 2026, the Lexus ES undergoes the most dramatic transformation in its 37-year history. First off, it's 6.5 inches longer, 2.2 inches wider, and 4.5 inches taller than its seventh-generation predecessor. That makes it more similar in size to the recently discontinued LS sedan than the previous ES.
Then there's the styling. The new ES takes on an edgier look and feel, with flatter bodywork panels, harder edges, and an angular personality that signals a new era for Lexus. Up front, the signature spindle grille has been reduced to a flat trapezoidal section in the nose, with a narrow grille below and a narrow slit above. That slit is one of the few differences between the ES 350h hybrid model reviewed here and the all-electric ES that is covered separately.
The profile view catches the light in a way that further accentuates the beveled surfaces, marking a significant departure from the complex, flowing curves that once defined the exterior. An odd graphical slash crosses the doors in an effort to break up the vast expanse of sheet metal, but it ends up looking out of place in an otherwise clean design.
The tapering fastback-like roofline comes to a point at the trunk, framing a single horizontal taillight bar that spans the width of the tail. L-shaped turn signals flank the bottom corners and are likely to be incorporated into future Lexus redesigns.
On the inside, the ES is similarly modern, with a simpler layout that many carmakers have adopted. A broad horizontal dashboard accentuates the cockpit's lateral space, accentuated by a large infotainment touchscreen atop the center. Other modern touches include push-button door latches and the Lexus name spelled out across the steering wheel.
The NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery is a fairly convincing substitute for the genuine article, which is good since actual leather isn't available. Sadly, this hybrid ES misses out on the premium leather and bamboo trim that's offered in the all-electric variant. Fortunately, it carries over the same sturdy construction and high-quality materials throughout the interior. The rear seats are similarly outfitted, but the LS-inspired Executive seat package with reclining and massaging seats is also exclusive to the electric model only.
The 2026 Lexus ES 350h is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine that produces 244 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) sends power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is available with the addition of an electric motor for the rear wheels. Lexus estimates the front-drive ES 350h will accelerate to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, while the AWD model should get there in 7.1 seconds.
These specs beat the previous ES 300h hybrid, but neither is particularly inspiring, and that's actually just fine. The ES focuses on comfort over performance, which could be a welcome relief for more conservative drivers who value a smooth ride over sporty cornering abilities. Acceleration is leisurely, prompting us to apply heavier pressure on the pedal when merging onto highways. Power is adequate, but not much more, as the laboring four-cylinder engine takes us out of the premium luxury fantasy.
When slowing, the brake pedal has very little effort, but brings the sedan to a stop as predictably and smoothly as we expected. There's no hint of the transition between regenerative braking and the physical brakes, resulting in a seamless driving experience. Handling is also adequate but not impressive. It navigates curves with grace, but the soft suspension tuning doesn't encourage more lively antics behind the wheel.
As a result, bumps are easily erased as the ES glides down the highway. There's barely any detectable wind or road noise, reinforcing the notion that this is a replacement for Lexus' flagship LS sedan.
Another hint that the ES is the new LS can be found in the rear seats. After gaining 1.4 inches of legroom, there's a wealth of space back there, even for taller adult passengers. Headroom also increases by 0.4 inches, but the sloping roofline will likely limit clearance for six-footers. Passengers of any height would do well to stoop and duck when getting in and out, though, as the roofline has a nasty habit of getting in the way.
The front seats have unimpeded access and deliver similarly ample space. There's plenty of lateral space to stretch out, though storage for your personal items is merely average. A large center armrest bin and a shallow tray under the center console are bright spots among rather small cupholders and door pockets. A wireless charging pad is standard, but its hard plastic surface struggles to keep your phone from sliding out of position.
Despite the ES's fastback-like silhouette, it features a conventional trunk instead of a rear hatch. It can hold up to 17.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is 3.5 cu-ft more than the previous generation. It's a wide and useful space that can easily swallow bulkier objects, and loading is helped by a standard power trunk lid. Unfortunately, the rear seatbacks do not fold to expand hauling capabilities, but there is a center pass-through for longer objects.
The 2026 ES makes use of Lexus' latest infotainment operating system and adds a new on-screen shortcut button to quickly access the home screen. Also new are some customizable widgets that are accessed by swiping to the right, giving you personalized shortcuts to your most commonly used features. The graphics are sharp and the display is easy to read in any light, while responses to your inputs are quick. It also helps that the menus are logically arranged. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included and pair well with the standard wireless charging pad. A second charger is also available as an option.
The ES 350h is available either in Premium or Premium+ trim levels. Standard features for all models include the 14-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument panel. The base audio system has 10-speakers, satellite radio, and Spotify streaming. Stepping up to the Premium+ trim upgrades you to a Mark Levinson 17-speaker premium surround-sound system. You also get the digital key feature that replaces the standard key fob with your smartphone.
Finally, there's the new integrated Drive Recorder, a multi-camera dash cam. It can record on a running loop and automatically save incidents where a safety feature was activated. We chose to disable the save function as the alerts were more of a distraction while driving, but we see the merits of the overall system in more serious occasions.
As of this writing, crash test results were not available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All 2026 ES 350h models come standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure mitigation, lane centering, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams.
The Premium+ trim adds a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, parking proximity sensors, automatic reverse braking, an automated parking system with remote operation, lane-change assist, highway driving assist, a driver attention monitor, and a digital rearview mirror.
Our ES 350h was packed with all of these features, and all but the lane departure warning functioned flawlessly. The lane departure was too sensitive for our tastes, as it was triggered when you approached a lane marker, rather than when you touch or cross over one. We're also not fans of the Proactive Driving Assist that automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed when approaching and exiting curves. We found it far too intrusive and conservative when activated.
Prices for the new 2026 Lexus ES 350h start at $51,095 (including $1,395 in destination fees) for the Premium trim and $55,895 for the Premium+. Adding all-wheel drive only costs an additional $1,400 for either trim level. With no midsize sedans offered from Acura, Infiniti, or Genesis, the closest rivals are the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6. That gives the ES a significant price advantage, as those German sedans will cost between $10,000 and $14,000 more to start.
The EPA estimates the front-drive ES 350h will return up to 48/44 mpg city/highway and 46 mpg in combined driving. All-wheel drive lowers those figures to 47/42 mpg city/highway and 44 mpg combined. By comparison, the German rivals are rated between 23 and 31 mpg. There is a BMW 550e plug-in hybrid that is estimated to return 34 miles of EV range, as well as the Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 with up to 44 miles, but these alternatives cost $75,000 and $90,000, respectively.
With this in mind, the Lexus ES 350h holds a clear financial advantage, but it's actually not our choice in the ES lineup. That distinction goes to the all-electric ES 350e. It rings in at only $48,895, which is $2,200 less than the base ES 350h hybrid. It's estimated to return 307 miles of range and is noticeably quieter and quicker, while also costing a lot less to charge up.
