The Ram 1500 has been a perennial favorite, but the competition is catching up quickly.

Do you remember when pickup trucks were used only by construction workers and gardeners? They were work machines, meant to have scratched beds, a cab full of McDonald’s wrappers, and a big dent on the tailgate from an unfortunate run in with a telephone pole.

No anymore. Today’s trucks give luxury vehicles a run for their money with fancy features and ridiculous amounts of technology. Today we’re looking at the 2023 Ram 1500. This truck hasn’t gotten a major update since 2019, and while it still holds its own next to the offerings from Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota, the others are catching up quickly.

8/10

The full-size Ram 1500 can be had in a quad cab or larger crew cab with a 6-foot, 4-inch bed. The crew cab can also be had with a 5-foot, 7-inch bed, as in our review model. We drove the Ram 1500 Limited, which sits almost at the top of the eight trim levels: Tradesman, Tradesman HFE, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn, Limited and TRX.

You’ll find plenty of chrome on other 1500 trims, but this particular tester gets the $4,145 Night Edition option for a more stealthy look. Included here is a blacked out grille, black badging, as well as black headlamp bezels and mirror caps. And you can’t forget 22-inch black aluminum wheels. If you’re not a fan of shiny chrome, this package is well worth the money.

Inside, The Limited treats drivers to plenty of leather. There is some nice contrasting stitching as well, and the leather is embossed with the Limited logo on the center storage console. Especially nice is the open-pore wood on the dash with some metallic trim running horizontally through it. The steering wheel also gets some fancy wood and leather trim for an upscale look.

The 12-inch portrait-oriented screen gives the interior a unique look, and we like the chunky volume controls. You also get a Ram logo on the dash, watching over a little storage area. Between that and the Limited logo between the seats you’ll never forget which truck you’re driving.

Emme Hall loves small convertibles and gets out to the canyons in her 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata whenever she can. You can also find her in the dirt in her 2001 lifted Mazda Miata or racing air-cooled Volkswagens in races like the Baja 1000. She was the first driver to take an electric vehicle to the Rebelle Rally when she campaigned the Rivian R1T, earning a top-five finish.

Was nice truck very clean. The tonneau cover felt cheap, and the bed didnt have the cargo management system even though it has the bed extender. It does not have the locks so you can use it. Aug 19, 2024
