Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class offers three rows with a plush, modern interior and a variety of powertrains.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is the height of motoring comfort and versatility in a Mercedes SUV. It offers three rows of seating and plenty of cargo space in a plush, modern cabin. The GLS was last redesigned for the 2020 model year, and it carries over from ’22 to ’23 with minimal changes.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS provides a generous 84.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the second- and third rows folded. With the second row in use, it provides 42.7 and as much as 48.7 cubic feet when that row is slid forward. With all rows in use, the GLS offers 17.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.

The 2023 GLS-Class is offered in three tiers based on powertrain. The GLS 450 comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather seating, genuine leather steering wheel, woodgrain cabin accents, and LED ambient cabin lighting with 64 color options. The GLS also comes equipped with a fully digital instrument panel, nine USB ports, wireless device charging, a 13-speaker Burmester premium stereo system, and the MBUX touchscreen infotainment system. MBUX includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a powerful voice assistant. It can understand complex commands and responds to prompts beginning with “Hey, Mercedes…”

Moving up to the GLS 580 adds genuine leather upholstery, five-zone automatic climate control, massaging front seats, and a V8 engine. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 offers a more potent V8, performance exhaust, performance brakes, and a limited-slip rear differential. It also adds an impressive adaptive air suspension system.

The GLS 450 is powered by a mild-hybrid, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine which makes 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 580 comes fitted with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that generates 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The AMG GLS 63 boasts a handcrafted variant of this engine, tuned to put out 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. All engines route power through a nine-speed automatic transmission to 4Matic all-wheel drive (AWD). When properly equipped, the GLS-Class can tow up to 7,700 pounds.

Fuel economy for the GLS450 is 18 mpg city, 23 highway, and 20 combined. The GLS 580 returns 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined. The range-topping AMG GLS 63 returns fuel economy of 14 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class requires premium fuel.

The GLS comes equipped with a host of standard driver-assistance features. These include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, hands-free parking assist, and driver-drowsiness monitoring. It also comes standard with a warning system that will alert occupants of approaching vehicles before exiting. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, and a head-up display.

Base MSRP for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is $81,800 for the GLS 450. The GLS 580 starts at $105,500, and the range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 starts at $139,000. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
