2023 BMW 4 Series Reviews, Pricing & Specs

Overview
The BMW 4 Series gets its Gran Coupe body style back for the 2023 model year, plus a new, larger touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2023 BMW 4 Series is a dynamic compact luxury car. It is available in Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe body styles. All three deliver premium interiors and engaging performance.
What’s New for the 2023 BMW 4 Series
For 2023, the 4 Series gains a newly standard digital instrument panel and a new, larger touchscreen for the infotainment system. The Gran Coupe also returns to the lineup.
Design
The 2023 4 Series stands out in a crowd with its unmistakable (and sometimes polarizing) front-end design. The available convertible’s classic cloth top can open or close in about 18 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. The Gran Coupe has four doors and a wide-opening rear hatch.
Powertrain
The BMW 430i is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Moving up to the M440i upgrades the engine to a twin-turbocharged inline-six that puts out 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels or to available xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD).
Moving up to the M440i adds upgraded brakes, a sport differential, and a performance suspension. These features are available on the 430i as part of the Dynamic Handling Package.
The 2023 BMW 430i returns fuel economy of 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined. Adding xDrive AWD brings fuel economy down to 23 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined. The M440i returns 24 mpg city, 32 highway, 27 combined while the M440i xDrive returns 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined. The BMW 4 Series requires premium fuel.
Interior
Standard features on the 2023 4 Series include 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry, and power-adjustable front seats. Available features include 19-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. If it’s cabin space you’re after, look to the Gran Coupe, which has easily accessed rear seats and up to 45.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.
Technology
The 4 Series comes standard with a fully digital instrument panel and, for 2023, a 10.25-inch touchscreen that runs the iDrive infotainment system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a pair of USB ports are all standard, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo system is available.
Safety
BMW equips the 2023 4 Series with an assortment of modern driver-assistance features, including forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and speed-limit recognition. It also comes standard with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. The M440i is also available with a Parking Assistance Package that adds a 360-degree parking camera system and automatic parking assistance.
Pricing
Base MSRP for the 2023 BMW 4 Series at the time of this writing is $47,600 for the 430i Gran Coupe. The 430i Coupe starts at $49,100, and the 430i Convertible starts at $57,200. The M440i xDrive Convertible has the highest starting price, at $70,550. The BMW 4 Series is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.

What owners say
"Overall, drivers are really impressed with the 2023 BMW 4 Series, especially enjoying its performance, comfort, and styling. The M440i stands out for its fun driving experience and empowering features, though some drivers wish it had gesture controls, which were available in previous models. A few reviewers pointed out that the car might not meet expectations for those specifically looking for a four-door sports coupe, and there were mixed feelings about the hybrid functionality."
Perfect car with all the features we wanted at a fair price
February 10, 2025BMW M440 x drive convertible. This is my 6th BMW. Had a 328, 325, M3 and X3M40, as well as BMW motorcycle. Always a joy to own and drive. Convertible top works well. Noise, wind and temperature control superior to MINI Cooper Convertible I owned. HK sound system worth the additional expense. Chose this over M440 GC and M340 sedan. Late 50s driver with kids all out of the house.
March 12, 2024The car is fun, awesome to drive, and looks great. I compared the BMW to the Audi A5 and S5, which are also great cars, but chose primarily based on driving characteristics. I do not believe you can go wrong with any of the choices I carefully reviewed, but also am very pleased with the M440i choice I made!

June 22, 2023The BMW M4 is one of the best cars that I have ever driven. Its responsive, comfortable, and fast. One of the few things that is missing is gesture control. After having a 5 series for several years I became used to using gestures but since this is a convertible it does not have a camera on the interior roof. It is hard to compare the M4 to any vechicle but the closest would be the Audi RS5,
October 17, 2022I love my car and its features. It’s perfect for me. The car is of great value and I’m getting more. I had an Audi A5 before and I really liked that car also. My M440i is an upgraded version of that.
December 1, 2022It is a very pretty car, but if you are looking for a 4 door sports coupe like me, this isnt for you. This looks sportier in the picture, as it is taller than me height wise and is a hatch back. Also, even though it lists as a mild hybrid, it really isnt. The battery that is in the car is only there to make for a smoother transition when at stop lights/signs. The salesman even explained that to me, its not really a hybrid. It is also definitely a sedan, a slightly sporty sedan. Just not what I was looking for.
February 24, 2024Car is exceptional. Still wondering if (AWD)) makes the driving experience safer. RWD makes me think a little when driving in slick conditions.
