The 2023 Audi A5 Sportback is the functional five-door variant of the Audi A5 Coupe. It shares the coupe’s fastback design (hence the name), but it adds a second set of doors, providing more accessible rear seats. Unlike the A5 Coupe, which has two rear bucket seats and room for only four passengers, the A5 Sportback’s rear bench allows for up to five occupants. It also provides up to 35 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. With the rear seats in use, the A5 Sportback offers 21.8 cubic feet of cargo space, accessed via a wide-opening power rear hatch.
Trims for the A5 Sportback are Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The trims are further broken out into TFSI 40 and TFSI S-Line 45 versions, largely indicating powertrain. Standard features on the Premium include leather upholstery, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For 2023, Matrix-design LED headlights and new 18-inch five-double-spoke wheels come standard on the A5 Sportback Premium.
Moving up to the Premium Plus trim adds wireless device charging, remote keyless entry, driver’s seat memory presets, front-and-rear parking sensors, and a fully digital instrument panel, which Audi calls its “Virtual Cockpit.” A Bang and Olufsen premium sound system is standard on the Premium Plus for 2023. The range-topping Prestige trim features heated rear seats, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The base engine comes on the A5 Sportback 40, and it is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It makes 201 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. The A5 Sportback 45 S-Line also comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but it’s tuned to put out 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to Quattro all-wheel drive. The S-Line bumps up the driving experience with a sport suspension and both versions feature Audi Drive Select with Comfort, Auto, Dynamic (sport), and Individual (custom) drive modes.
The Sportback 40 is the more efficient of the two, returning fuel economy of 26 mpg city, 34 highway, and 29 combined. The Sportback 45 S-Line returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. Both powertrains require premium fuel.
Standard driver assistance features on the A5 Sportback include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Features such as front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display are all optional or equipped as standard on the upper-level trims.
Base MSRP for the 2023 Audi A5 Sportback is $44,100 for the Premium 40 trim. The Premium 45 starts at $46,200, the Premium Plus 40 starts at $49,700, and the Premium Plus 45 starts at $51,800. The Prestige 40 starts at $55,000 and the Prestige 45 starts at $56,250. The Audi A5 Sportback comes with a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2023 Audi A5 Sportback appreciate its performance, stylish design, and comfort, particularly enjoying the stereo system and hatchback utility. However, some felt the pricing was on the high side given the vehicle's mileage and model year."
Since BMW stopped making driving machines for everyday budgets, Audi is the best you can get. The A5 has all of the goodness of the A4 with a bit nicer look and the added utility of a hatchback.
December 10, 2023While it obviously doesnt pack quite the punch of the S5, this car still has plenty of get up and go. Creature comforts, stereo, etc are fantastic! My son is just shy of 62 and I can still comfortably sit in the back seat with him driving.
