Few vehicles have the presence of the 2022 McLaren 720S. The raucous, head-turning supercar announces its arrival with a screaming exhaust note, bold lines, and the telltale butterfly doors. The two-seat 720S is available as a hardtop or as a roadster, dubbed the 720 Spider. The 720S arrived for the 2017 model year. For 2022, the supercar is largely unchanged.
The cockpit of the 720S is a modern blend of form and motorsport-inspired function. The interior is wrapped in a combination of leather and Alcantara, and the controls layout has a minimalist philosophy. In Track mode, the digital instrument panel folds down into a thin digital strip so that the driver can focus on the road ahead. The center 7-inch touchscreen is located in the thin, floating center console in a portrait-style layout. It monitors track telemetry and operates the vehicle’s climate controls, as well as the standard four-speaker stereo. Buyers can opt for the Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo. The 720S has Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine is nestled behind the driver and ahead of the rear wheels, in an ideal mid-engine layout. It produces 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The transmission is paddle-operated or can be set to full auto. The 720S is capable of rocketing from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 212 mph, according to McLaren.
The 720S features an advanced adaptive suspension, a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, and a number of toggle adjustments for steering feel, throttle response, transmission mapping, and handling. It also features an active rear wing, which can aid in cornering downforce, high-speed stability, and even braking. If track times are not your thing, the 720S is equipped with a Variable Drift Mode, allowing the back end to get a bit loose.
EPA estimates for the 2022 McLaren 720S are 15 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined. You won’t find any of the driver-assistance features so common in modern passenger cars.
