The Chevrolet Colorado is a stout, capable truck that’s designed for work, play, and everyday life. The current generation of the Colorado has been on the market for a number of years. In 2020, the infotainment system was updated and in 2021, the truck received a mild styling refresh. It carries over from that update into 2022 largely unchanged.

The Colorado is available in extended cab and crew cab body styles. The extended cab features rear-hinged clamshell half-doors that can only be opened when the front door is also opened. They provide access to two small but serviceable rear jump seats. The crew cab is a full four-door truck with a rear bench that provides seating for up to five. Both versions come with helpful bed steps cut into the corners of the rear bumper.

Trims for the Colorado are WT (or Work Truck), LT, Z71, and ZR2. As the name suggests, the entry-level Work Truck is all about the basics, but it does include two USB ports, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moving up to the LT adds more USB ports, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and Chevy’s EZ lift & lower tailgate. It also upgrades the infotainment system to an 8-inch screen.

The Z71 trim adds an off-road suspension, an automatic locking rear differential, and hill descent control. It also adds synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, rear parking sensors, and wireless device charging.

While the Z71 is an off-road-oriented trim, the ZR2 is a trail-ready machine. In addition to standard four-wheel drive, it includes added under-body skid plates and locking front and rear differentials. It also adds genuine leather upholstery and a power-adjustable front passenger seat.

The base engine in the Colorado is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. The upgraded gas engine is a 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Chevy also offers a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

The gas and diesel four-cylinder engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The gas V6 is connected to an 8-speed automatic. Power is routed to the rear wheels or available four-wheel drive with low range. When properly equipped (with the diesel engine), the Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds, which is among the best in the midsize pickup truck segment. The Colorado also has a payload capacity of 1,550 pounds.

The most efficient version of the Colorado is the 2.8-liter diesel motor with rear-wheel drive. It returns 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 23 combined. The base four-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 25 highway, and 22 combined. The V6 engine returns 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined. The least efficient version of the Colorado is the four-wheel-drive ZR2 with the V6 engine, which returns 16 mpg city, 18 highway, and 17 combined.

The Colorado is short on standard safety features. You get the standard array of airbags, a backup camera, and the Teen Driver system, which lets the owner set speed and radio volume limits for a second set of keys. Available driver assistance features are limited to forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking sensors.

Base MSRP for the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is $25,200 for the rear-wheel-drive Work Truck with the extended cab. An extended-cab LT starts at $27,700. A four-wheel-drive LT trim with crew cab starts at $34,400. The Z71 trim in the same configuration starts at $38,000, and the range-topping ZR2 crew cab starts at $44,200. The Chevrolet Colorado is backed by a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

"Overall, drivers are quite pleased with the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. They like its smooth performance, towing capacity, and the spaciousness inside, making it a good fit for families. I really like the exterior aesthetic of this truck. It has an aggressive front-end styling and some key features to allow for some mild off-roading with no major modifications needed. Interior is very nice too, with leather seats and ZR2 badging on headrests. I can’t wait to drive it!
