The BMW X3 is a compact 5-seat crossover that competes with the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and Jaguar F-Pace. It was last redesigned in 2018. It carries over for 2020.
The X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i trims return for 2020. Both feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder capable of 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque that pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The sDrive30i is rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the xDrive30i is all-wheel drive (AWD). Fuel-economy ratings are as high as 25 mpg city, 29 highway and 27 combined with premium fuel.
If you’re in the market for more power, BMW also offers the X3 M40i. It packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 382 hp and 365 lb-ft and pairs with an 8-speed automatic and standard AWD. It also benefits from an aggressive M Sport aerodynamics kit, beefier brakes, and a sport suspension. With fuel-economy numbers of 21/27/23, it doesn’t give up much efficiency to the 4-cylinder X3s.
The X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i trims come in xLine, Luxury, and M Sport variants. But even the most basic X3 benefits from LED fog lights, LED headlights, leatherette upholstery, 10-way power front seats, a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat, a 12-speaker and 205-watt sound system, and keyless start. Satellite radio, a panoramic moonroof, cornering lights, heated front and rear seats, 3-zone climate control, navigation, adaptive dampers, and a head-up display (HUD) are among the list of options. The M40i features the M Sport content as standard equipment.
The X3’s standard list of safety equipment is pretty light, including a reversing camera and reversing sensors. However, you can add forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, forward cross-traffic alert, traffic-jam assist, evasion aid, a surround-view camera, front parking sensors, and a parking assistant. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the X3 its highest scores for crashworthiness and crash prevention.
In the competitive field of luxury crossovers, the X3 remains a solid choice.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2020 BMW X3 are highly impressed with its blend of style, performance, and functionality. They particularly appreciate its power, comfortable ride, and numerous high-tech features. However, some drivers noted that it has slightly less cargo space compared to larger models, which might be a minor drawback for those needing extra room."
The vehicle had every feature I wanted plus more. It is a good value in this segment.
July 13, 2020The X3 M40i is a SUV with sports car performance, it’s in a different league.
January 31, 2023Extraordinary ride, very personable for me, as a middle aged woman, no kids, not too much to handle and all the bells and whistles. Sexy, sleek, great on gas and I am up high enough, coming from a 3281 conv. I am pleased!

March 13, 2021I really like this car so far. I had a 2017 X5 PHEV and decided I wanted something a little smaller. I think the size is perfect. The lease cost, after the state and federal tax credits, feels like good value to me.
June 24, 2020Just purchased a 2020 BMW X3 M40i and highly recommend it. I lije the great engine this model has for its power and 32 mpg gas mileage on trips. It is the perfect size. Mid size exterior and an interior that is pretty roomy. Handles well especially with M Sport suspension. Interior well put together. I Drive 7 has great functionality and is quite easy to use. Uses min 91 octane gas but that is a small price.
September 9, 2023Specifically, the X3 M40i is stellar. The reliability of the b58 engine combined with the horsepower inside this SUV is top tier. I would recommend this vehicle and any vehicle with the b58 to someone looking for fun/fast yet reliable.
February 13, 2023Great, smooth ride. Excellent handling. Sport mode great for quick acceleration.
April 27, 2021Perfect combination of style, performance, and functionality. Best of the BMW X series!
April 10, 2020This is an incredible car for the money. Enough room to go for a weekend trip, and enough speed to put your back into the seat. It’s comfortable when you need it to be, and aggressive when you want it to be. All around a great buy.
March 22, 2023We looked at the x3 M40i and the X3 “M” both cars are a great vehicle. We chose the X3 “M” because we are performance people. The suv has everything we wanted (and a lot more) a little less cargo room than our X5. Both vehicles are highly recommended.
