2019 Toyota Tacoma 4WD TRD Off-Road Now we're talking about a very different kind of vehicle. The TRD Off-Road is built around actual off-road capability rather than luxury or fuel economy. Coolest features 3.5L V6 — 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case — proper low-range 4WD for difficult terrain. Electronically locking rear differential — one of the biggest reasons to choose the TRD Off-Road. It can help keep both rear wheels turning when traction gets ugly. Crawl Control — basically low-speed off-road cruise control. You select a very slow speed and the truck manages throttle and braking while you concentrate on steering. Toyota offered five low-speed settings. Multi-Terrain Select — on automatics, you can select terrain such as mud/sand or loose rock and the truck adjusts throttle and braking to maximize traction. Active Traction Control — helps manage wheelspin when you're on slippery or uneven terrain. TRD-tuned suspension — specifically calibrated for off-road use. 9.4 inches of ground clearance — enough to tackle substantially more than a normal crossover. Hill Start Assist and Downhill Assist Control — useful on steep trails. Tow package — V6 models were equipped with the hardware for serious towing, with maximum capacity depending on configuration reaching 6,400–6,700 lb. 21.1-gallon fuel tank — useful when you're traveling away from civilization. Composite bed — the Tacoma's bed is designed to take abuse without requiring a traditional steel bed liner. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto weren't standard on the 2019 U.S. Tacoma, so this is one area where newer vehicles have a major advantage. The really cool stuff 1. Crawl Control This is probably the party trick. Put the Tacoma in the appropriate 4WD setting, activate Crawl Control, choose a speed, and the truck controls acceleration and braking while you steer. Toyota specifically designed it for challenging low-speed terrain. 2. Rear locker This is arguably more important than Crawl Control. When you're climbing over something and one rear wheel loses traction, locking the rear differential forces both rear wheels to work together. 3. Multi-Terrain Select Instead of simply putting the truck in 4WD and hoping for the best, the system lets you tell the truck what kind of surface you're driving on. That's particularly useful on loose rock, mud and sand.
