The teardrop-shaped sports car with the rear-mounted engine has defied vehicular convention since 1965, becoming a performance icon in the process. Even in entry-level Carrera guise, the 911 punches above its considerable price point in performance, and its achingly pretty as well as technically brilliant. The lineup includes two turbocharged flat-sixes; rear- and all-wheel drive; manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions; and coupe, cabriolet, and Targa body styles. The 911s now-defunct naturally aspirated engines were thrilling, and the new-for-2017 twin-turbo flat-six is equally so, only with more power and a dose of cutting-edge technology baked in. The 3.0-liter turbo in the Carrera now produces 370 horsepower, while in the Carrera S it's pushed to 420. The standard seven-speed stick shift is fun to work, and the optional PDK dual-clutch automatic sets the standard for shift quickness and intelligent programming. The 911s new twin-turbo engine is smooth and makes great noises, with plenty of grunt available right off idle, and it delivers power with surprisingly little turbo lag. Objectively a strong performer and subjectively a joy to drive. The Carrera models corner with alacrity, the body stays flat, and the tires deliver gobs of grip. All-wheel-drive versions exit corners with particular ferocity, their four-wheel traction clawing out of bends like a cat being sprayed by a Super Soaker. The 911s touchscreen infotainment system has been updated for 2017. The dashboard display improves performance now that it functions more cohesively, with more intuitive menus and controls. The new Porsche Communication systems improvements include a simplified on-screen menu, on-screen shortcuts to main functions backed up by redundant hard buttons, and Apple CarPlay. The Porsche 911 is the benchmark many others are measured against, for a very good reason.
