The Outback is powered by a 3.6L horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder, which generates 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. It drives all four wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission, which has steering-wheel-mounted buttons to emulate a six-speed manually shifted transmission when the driver desires. It has abundant Power (unlike the base 2.5L 4-cylinder model) and offers immediate, lag-free acceleration for highway passing and mountain driving. When tested on the track it sprinted to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, a significant 2.5 seconds quicker than the flat-four's time of 9.4 seconds. The fuel economy is at aprox 21mpg City and 28mpg Hwy. Not only did the 2018 Outback receive the highest five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the IIHS considers it a 2018 Top Safety Pick+, its highest designation. Getting the Top Safety Pick+ rating is not easy, but the Outback did it by getting the highest rating of Good in all six crash tests.
