Dealer's description
The 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S is one of the most respected pony cars of the entire muscle car era, and 1969 was the last year Plymouth built this generation before a complete redesign arrived for 1970. The Formula S package was Plymouth's performance statement, combining the Super Commando 383 cubic inch big block with heavy duty torsion bars, heavy duty rear leaf springs, a front stabilizer bar, firm ride shocks, wide tread red streak tires, dual exhaust, a four barrel carburetor, and a special cam straight from the factory. Plymouth offered the whole package in 1969 for $221.65 over the base price. The original window sticker on this car shows a total factory price of $2,780. That sticker is still with the car today. Under the hood is that 383 Super Commando V8 backed by a four speed manual transmission, putting 330 horsepower through the rear wheels the way Plymouth intended. The drivetrain in this car was built by Norm VerHage out of Holland, Michigan, a name that carries real weight in Mopar restoration circles. A red shifter, factory tachometer, and front disc brakes round out a car that is set up to be driven and enjoyed, not just admired. Inside, the black leather seats are clean and correct. A Kenwood radio with stainless steel knobs fits the period without looking out of place, and the Cuda steering wheel gives the driver exactly the right connection to the car. The interior is simple, well executed, and honest. The story behind this particular car is worth knowing. It began as two separate 1969 Barracudas. One was a rusted out 383 car originally from Oregon, later found in Michigan. The other was a rust free body from Arizona. Norm VerHage started the process of combining the best of both cars in June of 1994 and completed the restoration in June of 1997. Three years of work went into making this car look like it just rolled off the assembly line. The car was later purchased at auction in 2016 and comes with over $40,000 in documented restoration receipts, the original broadcast sheet, original title and copy, original service inspection, and a full history file. There is very little guesswork involved with this car. A properly documented, expertly built Formula S 383 from the final year of the second generation. These do not come along like this very often.
