Sharing all but its hard top with the convertible 718 Boxster, the Cayman is a focused performance machine; and, as the entry-level Porsche sports car, its seriousness sets the stage for the rest of the lineup. Yes, the Cayman is that good. Three engines are available: a 300-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four in the base Cayman, a 350-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four in the Cayman S, and a 365-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four in the Cayman GTS. All three engines are capable and very quick. However, we're partial to the more powerful Cayman S and GTS models. A Cayman S with the automatic managed a lightning-quick 3.9-second zero-to-60-mph time in our testing. The Cayman's willful chassis and telepathic steering transcend perfection. The Cayman is a sublime mix of heady handling and a relatively relaxed ride. The 2019 Porsche 718 is beautiful by our standards, or anyone elses, really. Few cars handle and drive as well as the 2019 Porsche 718. Lightning strikes twice for Porsche. On our rating scale, the 2019 718 gets a 10 for performance. Same goes for the 911. How can both cars be perfect? Go drive em. Well wait here. Go ahead. Back already? Yeah, both cars are quick. Outright speed isnt the only reason to consider S or GTS models: both versions feature trick turbos that cut down on lag and deliver power across fat slices of the rev range, which means better response out of corners. Opting for the automatic transmission wont be a fun-crusher. The dual-clutch automatic, which Porsche calls PDK, is quick and uses virtual ratios between gears to find sweet spots faster. All 718s benefit from Porsches excellent steering tuning that uses electric power assist, but also relate the road back to drivers in a way that other automakers havent yet figured out. An optional power boost at low speeds makes the 718 even more maneuverable around tight parking lots, too.
