Performance That Delivers Under the hood, the 2003 Mach 1 featured a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter DOHC V8, derived from the engine found in the 2001 SVT Cobra. Producing 305 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, it offered a significant step up from the 260-hp Mustang GT. The engine featured high-flow heads, performance camshafts, and a specially tuned intake to make the most of its power band. Backed by a Tremec 3650 five-speed manual transmission (a 4-speed automatic was also available), the Mach 1 could sprint from 060 mph in around 5.3 seconds and run the quarter-mile in the mid-13-second rangestrong numbers for its time and price point. To handle that power, Ford upgraded the suspension with stiffer springs, Tokico gas shocks, and thicker sway bars. A 3.55 rear axle ratio gave the Mach 1 more urgency off the line, and 13-inch Brembo front brakes (borrowed from the Cobra) provided serious stopping power. A Unique Driving Experience Driving the 2003 Mach 1 was all about character and connection. The V8 roared through a specially tuned exhaust with a deep, throaty growl.
