The 355 was the successor to the legendary Ferrari 348. Design emphasis for the 355 was placed on significantly improved performance, as well as drivability across a wider range of speeds and in different environments (such as low-speed city traffic.) The 355 is powered by a longitudinal V8. Apart from the displacement increase from 3.4 to 3.5 L, the major difference between the engine in the 348 and 355 is the introduction of a 5-valve cylinder head. The new head design allowed for improved intake and resulted in an engine that was considerably more powerful, producing 375 hp. Other changes to the car include aerodynamic improvements that were the result of over 1300 hours of wind-tunnel testing, and seats that are fitted asymmetrically, putting the driver's position closer to the center line of the car. Of course, this was the state-of-the-art in 1999, so it has all of the features would expect in a modern sports including leather seats with power controls, power windows and locks, air conditioning, a stereo system, plus comfort and sport damper settings.
