Brief History of the Beetle; When the first Type 1 rolled off the production line in 1945, it was simply called the Volkswagen - "The People's Car". However, its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe almost immediately. Referred to commonly as the Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, or Maggiolino; the Beetle sold more than 21.5 million first-generation models, making it the one of the most popular cars of all time.
