Brief history of the Acapulco Thing; In the early 1970s, Volkswagen began producing the Type 181 for civilian markets around the world, including the United States. The Volkswagen Thing Acapulco was designed as a special edition of the Type 181 for the American market and was available for purchase by the general public through Volkswagen dealers. It also featured a removeable top and removable doors, which made it perfect for enjoying sunny days at the beach.
