What should I look for when buying a used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
Across all model years, at 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2019 | 68.1% |
| 2018 | 63.6% |
| 2017 | 64.2% |
| 2016 | 63.7% |
| 2015 | 65.6% |
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Driver Assistance package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection.
- Infotainment: 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 1.4-liter engine with the manual transmission is impressively efficient, returning 29 mpg city, 37 highway, 32 combined. With the automatic transmission, it returns 27, 36, 31. The least-efficient version of the SportWagen is still pretty darned efficient. That would be the 1.8T with the automatic transmission, returning 22 mpg city, 29 highway, 24 combined. Our “unicorn” test model, which had the 1.8T and 6-speed manual, returned 22, 31, 25. In a week of combined city and highway driving, we observed average fuel economy of 24.3 mpg.
Which Volkswagen Golf SportWagen trim should I buy?
The 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen offers...
- S: This is the best-value trim if you want the core wagon experience with a well-equipped cabin, including 16-inch alloy wheels, heated power-folding side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, black roof rails, LED taillights, LED daytime running lights, and one-touch up/down power windows for all four windows.
- S 4Motion: This is the best-value trim if you want the stronger 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, AWD, heated front washer nozzles, heated front seats, and the added capability that comes with the recommended Driver Assistance package.
- SE: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, fog lights, LED headlights with adaptive front lighting, keyless entry with push-button start, and leatherette seating.
What Volkswagen Golf SportWagen do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen years with the most listings are 2015, 2016, and 2017.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % | |---|---|---|---| | 2015 | 241 | 32.4% | | 2016 | 234 | 31.6% | | 2017 | 173 | 30.6% | | 2018 | 107 | 32.7% | | 2019 | 47 | 29.8% |
Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they usually offer more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right price, mileage, and condition. They also often become the default starting point for used buyers who want the broadest selection.
What is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change | |---|---|---|---| | 2017 | $11,234 | −10.56% | | 2015 | $10,386 | −8.34% | | 2016 | $10,652 | +5.08% |
The table shows mixed movement, with two years moving down and one moving up. For used buyers, that creates some opportunity on the years that have softened, while the year that rose suggests steadier demand in that slice of the market. The spread is also fairly modest overall, so you can focus more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on dramatic price swings.
The 2016, 2015, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen safe?
- 2019: 7/10
- 2016: 8/10
The 2019 model includes the Driver Assistance package on the SE trim, with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam control.
For the safest used buy, the 2016 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2017 model is at −10.56% versus a year ago, and the 2015 model is at −8.34%.
- Deal availability: The 2017 model has 30.6% good and great deals, and the 2015 model has 32.4%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2015 model has the most listings at a current average price of $10,386. The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen offers a practical wagon layout with a roomy cargo area and a comfortable, easy-to-live-with cabin.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: It’s a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, making 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: It comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and one USB port. It runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection.
- Starting price: The 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen starts at $21,895.
If you're buying used today, the 2015 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for 2020 inventory to mature.

The 2019 Golf SportWagen is a near prefect car for our needs. it has sufficient power to be easily driven at freeway speeds all day. At the same time, it is small enough to be comfortable in city driving. The safety features and displays are state of the art, yet they recognize the driver as being the person in control. There is plenty of cargo space. With the rear seat folded, there is enough room for two adult bicycles in the back of the car. The car is very comfortable and the cloth sear option if VERY pleasant. The VW SportWagen is a VASTLY superior option to the panoply of ridiculous SUV choices, all of which are too big physically while having less cargo room. Good gas milage is a given. This may well be the last of the truly excellent small station wagons. The VW makes a good comparison with the Audi Avant and Allroad, but at a considerably reduced price point. There is not a car that I would rather have.
