Summary

Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends the Beetle’s familiar retro charm with a more modern, better-rounded package than earlier versions. In its third generation, it kept the front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and grew longer, wider, and slightly lower, which gave it a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space. It also gained a more coupe-like profile and a premium-feeling cabin, while still preserving the distinctive shape that makes a Beetle instantly recognizable.
For 2019, the Beetle’s appeal was also tied to its equipment and drivability. The model year used the 2.0 TSI engine with 174 horsepower and a six-speed conventional Tiptronic automatic transmission, and the guide notes that this engine returned better fuel consumption than the 1.8, with a combined EPA rating of 29 mpg. The third-generation Beetle was also described as good to drive and well-equipped, which helps explain why it is often seen as the strongest modern Beetle overall.
That said, the 2019 Beetle was not without compromises. The guide says it does not have a standout reliability record, and engines and timing chains can be problematic. It also notes that visibility is not great and that some alternatives are more fun to drive. Even so, for buyers who want a compact car with personality, useful space, and a strong retro-modern identity, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle remains a distinctive choice.

I love this car. Its quick and easy to handle. and its really nice looking. I miss the bud vase that was a standard in the old models. If only it could be made in a 4wd that would be great. As far as performance it handles really well. Having the comvertible model makes it really fun too.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,709 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,562 |
| Year-Round High | $26,583 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,177 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +6.34% |
Prices are up 6.34% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 277 listings available, which gives you a moderate amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, stylish design, and impressive features, and many also highlight its spacious interior and excellent handling. That makes it a good fit if you want a compact car with personality, useful space, and a more premium-feeling cabin. With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many owners enjoy living with over time, especially for its fun driving experience and well-liked overall character. The strongest reliability takeaway is that satisfied owners tend to keep confidence in the car’s day-to-day dependability. For used buyers, that still means you should watch for long-term ownership risk by checking maintenance history carefully and confirming the car has been well cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of past repair work. Because this model year can attract buyers for style as much as condition, focus on the details that affect long-term ownership, not just appearance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Beetle?
This is a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 277 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.34% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,562, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $25,709 sits slightly above last year's $24,177.
That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for a well-kept example, especially if it presents cleanly and has a strong history. Because the year-round range tops out at $26,583, well-priced cars can still hold appeal without needing to be the cheapest option on the lot. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you should have a reasonable path to preserving value. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.34% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $19,905, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $25,709 average.
- It offers a final-year update with a special-edition feel.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market choice, the 2019 is the better target because it has solid owner satisfaction and a clear market presence. If your priority is spending less, the 2018 is the better value path, especially if you like the Beetle’s retro character and want to save several thousand dollars.
