Summary
With 2,380 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,625, 30.5% of 2017 Jeep Cherokee listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with a more crossover-like shape. For this model year, it wore high-intensity discharge headlamps on all trims except the Sport, and Jeep had already expanded the lineup with the High Altitude and Overland trims. That combination gave the Cherokee a more upscale and contemporary feel than its rugged reputation might suggest, while still keeping the brand’s familiar identity.
It also offered a mix of everyday convenience and real capability. Standard equipment included LED taillamps, Bluetooth, air conditioning, two USB ports, an aux jack, an SD card reader, and remote keyless entry, while the 5-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5.0 and voice recognition kept the cabin reasonably modern. Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system was included on 4x4 trims, and the Cherokee could still be had with a low-range transfer case on some versions, with the Trailhawk adding a rear differential lock. At the same time, the model’s limitations were clear: the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder was described as harsh and underpowered, and the Cherokee was not as capable off-road as the older Cherokee that came before it.
For buyers, the appeal of the 2017 Cherokee was the breadth of its equipment and trim choices. The Limited brought features such as leather upholstery with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 8.4 and SiriusXM radio, while the Trailhawk added red tow hooks, all-terrain tires, a one-inch lift, revised bumpers, and a Rock mode for Selec-Terrain. That mix of comfort, technology, and available trail hardware helped make the 2017 Cherokee a distinctive choice, even if its transmission and powertrain reputation kept it from being an easy recommendation for everyone.

I had a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk a few years ago and I fell in love with the Cherokee ls after that. Sadly I had to part ways with the original one I had but being able to find another Cherokee at a good price and mileage is amazing. I love the ride it provides! Great sound system, modern interior and design, quiet ride in the cab with minimal road noise and incredibly comfortable. Love the Cherokees!

It also fits well if you want a compact SUV that balances everyday convenience with available Jeep capability. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

At the same time, some reviews mention breakdowns and repairs, so long-term ownership risk is worth taking seriously on the used market.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee?
At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if a listing looks unusually well priced. Put inspection priority on body condition, repair quality, and signs of past collision work. It also makes sense to focus on how the vehicle drives and whether any warning lights, unusual noises, or shifting issues show up during a test drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,391 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.9% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $11,577 sits slightly below last year's $12,355.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting losses later. The current price trend also means resale value will likely depend heavily on mileage, condition, and maintenance history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $10,189, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,577 average.
- It offers impressive capability at a reasonable price.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better value-oriented path.
