What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, uneven wear, and any evidence of hard use. Because this truck is often bought for capability, condition matters as much as mileage, especially if you plan to use it off pavement or tow. Pay close attention to how the truck was equipped and whether the features you want are present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SR and SR5 models use fabric-trimmed seats, while the Limited gets premium leather. The TRD Off-Road adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension, so it’s the trim to look at if you want the most trail-focused hardware.
• Powertrain: You can choose a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or the new 3.5-liter V6. The 4-cylinder makes 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque and is described as more powerful and efficient.
• Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The truck also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and a rear-view camera are among the important driver aids mentioned.
• Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 models add Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and the Scout GPS Link navigation app, TRD models get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite, and Limited models get Entune Premium JBL Audio. Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition are standard, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder is rated at 19 mpg city/23 highway with RWD, while the V6 is rated at 19 mpg city/24 highway with RWD and 18 mpg city/23 highway with 4WD. The V6 TRD Off-Road test vehicle returned 18 mpg city/23 highway.

Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes the most sense if you want the Tacoma’s core durability and utility without paying for extra equipment.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and the Scout GPS Link navigation app while staying below the more expensive TRD models.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more feature-rich Tacoma with upgraded infotainment and a stronger emphasis on everyday refinement than the base trims.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to buy if you want the most trail-ready setup, with extra skidplates, Bilstein dampers, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
• Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale Tacoma, with premium leather and the top Entune Premium JBL Audio system.

The safety package includes Toyota Star Safety System, plus driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,269 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,318, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $23,403 sits slightly below last year's $24,275.

That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the Tacoma remains in a relatively stable value band rather than dropping sharply. For a future seller, that kind of moderation is useful because it points to steady demand instead of a steep decline. The truck’s reputation for durability and strong owner satisfaction should continue to support buyer interest over time.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Tacoma carries the Toyota Star Safety System, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Available 4WD features like Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control add another layer of confidence when you’re driving in difficult conditions.

The main caveat is that crash-test ratings for this model year weren’t yet available in the source material.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It brings a redesigned body, stronger tech, and a more refined driving experience than the previous generation.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $20,256, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,403 average.
• It is a rugged, off-road-focused pickup with a limited-production TRD Pro trim.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Tacoma with newer design and tech, the 2016 is the stronger pick. If your budget is tighter and you mainly want a rugged, trail-oriented truck, the 2015 can still make sense.

How does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma compare to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 7.7/10 and the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 6.7/10.

The Tacoma asks more money on the used market, but it also brings stronger resale appeal and a more established reputation for durability. The Colorado is cheaper to buy and offers better highway fuel economy, which may matter more if you prioritize upfront value and daily commuting. If you want the truck with the stronger overall expert score and a more proven identity, the Tacoma is the safer bet; if you want lower entry cost, the Colorado is worth a look.
